Om Kumar Harsh
Om Kumar Harsh, currently is Honorary Pro-Chancellor (Additional) of Glocal University, India, popularly known as Dr. O. K. Harsh, born in September 1952, is an Indo-Australian multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientist [1] [2] [3] [ 5] [12] [20] [12], educator [3] [4] [25] [25] and former vice chancellor of Glocal University [3] [13] [33] [34], India and Tantia University [4 ], India and the former Pro-Chancellor (Additional) of Glocal University [1] [5] [6], India with four research degrees, notably in Semiconductor Plasma Physics [16] [20], Engineering [16] and Computer Science [1] [2]. He is the outstanding alumni of the University of New England [1] [2]. He has broad qualifications in Physics, Engineering and Computer Science such as: Ph.D. (Computer Science, UNE, Australia) [1] [2], Ph.D. (Semiconductor Plasma Physics) of the University of Agra, India (now Dr. BR Ambedkar University) [1 ] [5], D.Sc. (Semiconductor Plasma Physics) of Kanpur University, India (now Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU)) [16] [17] M. Comp. (Computing-IT, UWSN, Australia) [66], M.Sc. (Electrical Engineering, By Research, UNSW, Australia) [17], M.Sc. (Physics, Raj University, India), Grad Cert (Chem. Instruments, TAFE, Australia) [68].
Biography
The work of Prof. Om Kumar Harsh is no different from the four research degrees in which he received his Master's (M.Sc.) in Physics from the University of Rajasthan in 1975 and began his career as a Ph.D. researcher at the Agra University (now Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra, India) [1]. In 1979 he received his Doctorate from the same university [1] [5]. In 1977 he worked at Lucknow University in India (March 1978 to February 1981) and later at the Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University in India (March 1981 to Marchember 1981) as a CSIR [69] senior and Post-doctoral research Fellow. In Marchember 1981 he entered the Faculty of Physics of the University of Kanpur in India (FG College, Rae Bareli, UP, India) and remained there until July 1994. As a researcher his achievements came in light when in a ceremony of the Kanpur University, Ex-President of India and sitting Vice-President, Dr. K. R. Narayanan, conferred first Doctor of Science degree [15] [25] of Kanpur University to Dr. Harsh in 1990.
Prof. Harsh was the Vice Chancellor [3] [13] and Pro-Chancellor of Glocal University in Saharanpur [1][3] [5] [6][13] [33] [34][34], India and the Vice Chancellor of Tantia University, Sri Ganganagar [4 ], India. He worked for 44 years in five countries besides India, including 20 years in Australia, Malaysia, Oman, and Dubai. He was the Dean & Prof of Computer Science at the Champlain College, USA branch in Dubai [60] and the Director [9] of one of the largest engineering Colleges in North India - the Hindustan College of Science and Technology [21] and later became the Group Director of the Amritsar College of Engineering and Technology Group [22] [23]. In addition, he worked as Dean of Research and Development at Rayat Bahra University in Mohali [37]. Early in his long career, Dr Harsh studied and taught at various Indian universities before moving to the University of South Australia [64], University of New England [1] [2]; Campus of Charles Sturt University (Martins College), Sydney [65], Monash University, Malaysia [63]; US Champlain College Branch, Dubai [60]; And branches of the University of Missouri University S&T, USA [61] and the University of California State University, Northridge, (CSUN), USA [62] in Oman. Computer science, Engineering and Physics have their enduring passion in all their forms. Dr. Harsh is also an experienced industrial specialist in Australia. Prof Harsh has been involved in designing online Physics questionnaire for Senior School students [86].
Legacy
Prof Harsh has done extensive research in the disciplines of Theoretical Condensed Matter Plasma, Software & Knowledge Reuse, and Information Systems [2] [5] [12] [14] [18] [20]. His most interesting research work has been on surface and double plasma oscillations [14] [20][56] and knowledge reuse [12] [18] [30]. During his tenure as the vice chancellor of Tantia University [4] and Glocal University [3], [13] [33] [34], he was instrumental in introducing skill centers and reportedly played a part in the establishment of Multidisciplinary research Centre at Hindustan College, Mathura, India [21].
As a widely known person, mostly for his academic research [5] [14] [16], and educational administration[3][4][7] [8] [9] [10] in developing countries as well as in Australia [1] [2] [17], he has published over 105 research papers and articles including 65 research papers in peer reviewed journals and Guided 15 Ph.D. and M. Tech students in theoretical Semiconductor Plasma Physics [5] [17], Plasma Optics [5] [14] [20] [47] [48], Condensed Matter Physics [5] [12] [20], Computer Science [5] [12] and Information Systems [5] [12][18] Distance Education and learning and its related areas [5] [12]. Besides, he has published over 10 general articles on the topics related to Science, Learning, Astrology and Religion [15]. He has vastly contributed to educational administration as well as created practical awareness about the education by contributing to the skill and its related industrial development centers across several institutions.
Some of its commitments are the creation of skills development centers in various institutions such as Hindustan College of Science and Technology, Tantia University, Shri Ganganagar, Glocal University in Saharanpur, which have helped reduce unemployment (educated and uneducated people), especially in the rural India. Furthermore, he has been involved in several international programs and in scientific and professional organizations. Prof. Harsh has been intensely involved in course development, articulation agreement and various other academic activities at various universities of Great Britain, the United States and South Asia etc. [38] [39] [57]. Prof. Harsh has contributed to several joint exchange programs [38] [39] [57] for students and staff in India and abroad. He has been instrumental in the development of new courses and in monitoring and researching the quality of education [12] [36] [55] [58] [59] at various universities. As a member and organizer, he has been involved in numerous national and international conferences and seminars. Prof. Harsh has worked with prominent scientists such as Prof. B.K. Agarwal [70] (Doctor of Science Monitor 1982 -1989 at Allahabad University), Prof. K. S. Srivastava [71] (Ph.D. Physics Degree Supervisor from 1979 to 1980 and Post-Doctoral Research supervisor from March 1981 to Feb 1981 at Agra and Lucknow University), Prof. Martin Green [72] [75] [79] [80] (M.Sc. Electrical Engineering research Supervisor from 1994-1997 at UNSW, Sydney), Prof. A.S.M. Sajeev [73](Ph.D. Computer Science Supervisor from 2008- 2011 at University of New England, Australia), Prof M. S. Sodha [78] (very short time in March 1981 as a Post-doctoral Research supervisor (at IIT Delhi) and Ph.D. Physics Examiner at Agra University on Feb 9, 1980) and Prof. R. N. Singh [74] (post-Doctoral Research supervisor from March 1991 to Oct 1981 at BHU, Varanasi, India). Prof Harsh is greatly obliged to great academician Prof Mukunda Prasad Das [76 ] (Mentor and academic Referee from 1994 to date) and late Prof Vijay Shankar Vyas [77] (Mentor and academic Referee from 1990 t0 2018) for their constant advise and encouragement during my academic life and educational administrations. Prof Harsh has produced very good Ph.D. students, one of them was Dr. J. P. Goel who has been one of the great book writers for Intermediate and Degree Physics students [81] [82] [83] [84] [85].
Awards and recognitions
Dr. Harsh is the recipient of numerous Indian awards like the prestigious “Rastriya Gaurav Award” [27, 35] in 2012, “Most promising College award” [28] [9], and “Best Citizens of India award” [29] for the year 2012 for his outstanding academic contributions and achievements. As a researcher his achievements came in light when in a ceremony of the Kanpur University, Ex-President of India and sitting Vice-President, Dr. K. R. Narayanan, conferred first D.Sc. degree (Higher Doctorate) [15] [25] of Kanpur University to Dr. Harsh in 1990 by then the Vice President of India, Hon’ble K. R. Narayanan. He was also conferred Best Engineering University (Glocal University) of North India by Vice President, India in 2018 [26]. In 2018 he was honored by Distinguished Alumni award by the University of New England, Australia [1] [2]. He was the first Indian to receive this award. He was also honored with Brazilian Rio’s International Council Associate membership [24] based on his distinguished research work on Knowledge Management [14] [20][24][56] and knowledge reuse [12] [18] [30] [31]. At the beginning of the research, he received scholarships such as the Indian Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) Senior and Post-doctoral Research Fellowships [69], while later he received research awards from the University of New South Wales [67] and the University of New England [1] [2]. He is a member of the editorial board of several research journals [49] [50] [51] [52] [53] [54].
Personal life
He is married to Aruna and has two children Akhilesh and Aditya who work as scientists for the Australian government [44] [42] [43] and another in the Department of Social Services [45] [46]. The former is also an actor and can be seen in the film "Hotel Mumbai" [40] [41]. He has a grandson Arjun and a granddaughter Arya each.
