Where this is up to
I'm fairly confident that everything up to 1949 is complete with only minor checking needed of the 1946-1949 term. 1952 onwards needs more thorough checking, and the data I have so far extracted stops at 1958 so anything in 1961 should be regarded as an inference. I will be trying when I have time to get gazettes for 1961 and subsequent.
All material is sourced to the Queensland Government Gazette (more specific citations forthcoming) and to the Courier-Mail (as the QGG does not identify parties, and it can be hell to figure out by-elections from QGG.) The Archives at BCC have been helpful in providing corroboration (and occasional correction) for information gained from these sources.

1928–1931
editOn 18 February 1928, an election was held to elect a Mayor (who became the Lord Mayor during the term) and 20 aldermen of the Brisbane City Council. The election produced no net change in the party balance of the Council, although Labor alderman Alexander Elliott lost to the Nationalists' Louis Luckins in Maree and Nationalist alderman Alfred Harrison lost to Labor's John Innes Brown.
Lord Mayor William Jolly retired before the 1931 election, handing over to Archibald Watson.
Before the 1931 election, a redistribution of Legislative Assembly seats under the Electoral Districts Act 1931 resulted in changes to Council ward boundaries. As such, several councillors contested other wards:
- Frederick Bradbury – Toombul
- John Innes Brown – Coorparoo
- Arthur Laurie – South Brisbane
- John Soden – Stephens

1931–1934
editOn 2 May 1931, an election was held to elect 20 aldermen onto the Brisbane City Council, with the Lord Mayor to be elected from amongst the aldermen. A new grouping called the Civic Reform League triumphed at the election, with the former Nationalist majority being wiped out and the incumbent Lord Mayor losing his own ward seat.
Towards the end of the term, the Citizens' Municipal Organisation was formed to endorse and support non-Labor candidates. All of the sitting Nationalist, Civic Reform and Independent candidates were endorsed; however, Harry Massey opted to remain independent.

1934–1937
editOn 28 April 1934, an election was held to elect 20 aldermen and a Lord Mayor for the Brisbane City Council. Labor was victorious for the first time since the Greater Brisbane acheme commenced, winning 15 of the 21 seats — an increase of 8. Their rivals, formerly representing a range of groupings, had combined to form the Citizens' Municipal Organisation.
Prior to the 1937 election, the Labor Party failed to endorse four of its sitting members for preselection. One (John Alfred Moir — Brisbane) opted to retire, whilst the other three — including William Warmington, who had led municipal Labor from 1925 until 1934 — stood against the endorsed candidates as independents.
