Biography

Geneviève Berger (Born January 26, 1955) is a French biophysicist, Director General of CNRS from 2000 to 2003. A Normalienne (Cachan), she has held the post of Chief Research and Development Officer of Unilever since July 2008.

Geneviève Berger studied at the École normale supérieure de l'enseignement technique (which became in 1985 the École normale supérieure de Cachan (ENS Cachan)) from 1974 to 1978 where she obtained her diploma in 1977, before completing a science thesis in 1981 as well as medical studies ending in 1989. She was then recruited by CNRS and established a laboratory of parametric imagery (UMR 7623) a collaboration between CNRS and the University Paris VI-Pierre et Marie Curie at the CHU Broussais Hôtel-Dieu. She held the position of acting Head of Biophysics and Nuclear Medicine at the Hôpital de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Paris from 1997 to 2000.

After having been Director of Technology at the Ministry of Research in 2000 and a member of the Conseil d’administration du Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), she was named Director General of CNRS from 2000 to 2003.
