This List of mapping processes by discipline catalogs the various disciplines, or fields of study, that have adopted the word mapping to describe one or more functions within the field or discipline.

The field of Cartography derived the word map from the 16th century Latin term mappa mundi, mappa meaning "cloth" or "'sheet'", and mundi meaning "of the world". Mapping, the present participle of the word map, is the process of making a map which involves documenting the physical geography of the world and the heavens. While traditionally Mapping referred to a process for identifying and documenting physical spatial relationships, mapping in some disciplines may now refer to conceptual associations.

The field of mathematics derived the word map from a translation of the German word abbildung meaning "illustration" or "figure". The translation of abbildung to mapping was initially confined to specific uses in geometry, but was later used more abstractly to refer to a correspondence, transformation or association. Today's mathematics defines the term as, "An operation that associates each element of a given set (the domain) with one or more elements of a second set (the range)".

In contemporary usage the word mapping has become synonymous with many processes, including charting, plotting, delineating, surveying or associating.
