"The Thanksgiving Song"

Single by Ben Rector
LabelOK Kid
Songwriter(s)Ben Rector

That's right suckers, I wrote an article about "The Thanksgiving Song".

Background

edit

Amidst national lockdown enforcement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of Ben Rector's touring schedule for The Old Friends Acoustic Tour was cancelled and Rector was forced to stay at home. With an open schedule Rector found the free time liberating; although his next album had been recorded and ready, he rewrote most of it from scratch during quarantine.

Being a fan of the Christmas season, he also saw the free schedule as an opportunity to release a Christmas album.

  1. ^ The playlist contains Rector's "The Thanksgiving Song" 18 back-to-back times, broken up once with "Thanksgiving Theme" by Vince Guaraldi.

Rector's voice was lauded,[1][2] and considered to be "crystalline quality" by Atlanta Music Guide's Rosie Judd.[2] Mark Jenkins of The Washington Post and Matt Collar of AllMusic praised the album's themes,[1][3] and Jenkins noted that most of the songs could be "wedding standards".[1] Collar enjoyed the album for Rector's interpretation of everyday life.[3] Judd praised "Sailboat" for its escapism and Chelsea Gammon of The MBU Timeline appreciated it for it's honesty.[4] Judd also lauded Rector's songwriting ability in the songs "Making Money" and "I Like You".[4] HuffPost's John Chattman declared the album a "smash".[5] Critics overall appreciated the album's compelling simplicity;[1][2][4] Judd referred to the album as a "Sunday afternoon record",[2] Gammon called the album "passionately calm and vividly expressive",[4] and Jenkins particularly appreciated the anthemic "When I'm With You" and "Ordinary Love".[1]
