Notes

edit
  1. ^ During the first session of the newly formed International Olympic Committee, the city of Athens was unanimously chosen to stage the first Modern Olympic Games as a way to honour the birthplace of the Ancient Olympics. At the same time Athens was selected host city for the first Olympics, Paris was chosen as the site for the II Olympiad, thus fulfilling Coubertin's wish.[49]
  2. ^ In 1904, the Missouri city of St. Louis would stage the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a World's Fair. Due to fears that the Olympic Games in Chicago would compromise the Fair's success, city officials pressured Chicago with threats to hold athletics competitions of their own. Chicago's committee asked the IOC to either transfer the Games to St. Louis or delay them for one year. The IOC refused to postpone the Olympics and thus approved the Games transfer.[50]
  3. ^ On April 4, 1906, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius spread chaos on the volcano's surrounding area and forced the Italian government to give up the Games in order to direct vital funds to help the affected people. The IOC approached London with the a backup hosting proposal to which the city replied positively.[51]
  4. ^ Berlin's application to host the Games of the IV Olympiad was proposed by the first German IOC member, Willibald Gebhardt. However, seeing that Rome was considered a more reliable bid by the Committee members, Gebhardt withdrew its proposal leaving way for Rome's election.[2]
  5. ^ As in 1904, Berlin withdrew its Olympic bid before the final vote, this time due to uncertainty on the completion date of the construction of the Olympic stadium.[3]
  6. ^ The Games were cancelled because of the ongoing First World War.
  7. ^ Antwerp was entrusted with the 1920 Olympic Games in honour of the Belgians who fought, suffered and died during the war.[52]
  8. ^ Lyon withdrew in favour of Antwerp, postponing a new bid for the VIII Olympiad.[53]
  9. ^ Paris landed the Games for a second time to fulfill Coubertin's wish to witness a successful Olympics in his country, which would erase the flaws of the previous, before he retired from the IOC.[54]
  10. ^ Amsterdam was awarded the Games of 1928 as the result of a voting on a proposal which included the city of Paris hosting the Games of the previous Olympiad.[55]
  11. ^ Due to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japan relinquished its hosting rights to the 1940 Olympics. On 1938-07-15, the IOC relocated the Games to Helsinki.[56] Finland's invasion by the Soviet Union in 1939, and the ensuing World War II, forced the IOC to definitely cancel these Games.
  12. ^ As in 1940, the 1944 Games were also cancelled because of the ongoing World War II.
  13. ^ Australian laws concerning equine quarantine made it impossible for the Olympic equestrian events to be held within the Olympics in Melbourne.[57] Stockholm was thus elected as the venue for these events.
