The law which set up the Office of the Ombudsman Ireland in Ireland was the Ombudsman Act, 1980. Under this law the Ombudsman is appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Dáil and the Seanad. The Office of the Ombudsman investigates complaints about the activities of Government Departments, the Health Service Executive, local authorities and An Post.
