Telecom Namibia ICT Summit

The two-day Information Communication Technology (ICT)summit is annually hosted by Telecom Namibia. It is meant to bring together local and foreign industry practitioners, key ICT industry decision-makers and selected invitees from academia, the business sector, Government and NGOs, with the aim to increase awareness and exposure to the latest emerging trends and opportunities offered by ICT[1] .The Telecom Namibia Information Communication Technology (ICT) Summit takes at the Safari Hotel & Conference Centre in Windhoek.[2]


One biggest challenge addressed by the Summit is how to harness the potential of ICT to create an inclusive society, to promote the development goals of NDP-4, namely the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger; achievement of universal primary education; promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women; reduction of child mortality; improvement of maternal health; to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; and ensuring environmental sustainability[3].

event brings together industry analysts, IT executives from all sectors of the public and private life, and leading ICT vendors and service providers for uniquely collaborative discussions on today’s pressing telecommunications and IT issues, best practices and the latest tools and technology that will improve the performance of Namibia’s social and business sectors.[4]In 2009 ICT Summit was officially opened by Information and Communication Technology Minister, Honourable Joel Kaapanda. Board Chairman of Telecom Namibia.[5]

There are also a number of key questions answered at the summit. How best can we empower the poor, particularly those living in remote, rural and marginalised urban areas, to access information and knowledge? How can we promote IT literacy? How can we shape ICT progress and how to ensure that Namibian citizens and businesses can make the best out of it?[6] Many ICT companies showcase their products and services and close to 600 delegates use to attend the Summit. The event programme use to have an impressive line-up of local and international experts, that deliver presentations and participate.[7]
