Konoka Matsuda (Japanese: 松田好花, Hepburn: Matsuda Konoka, born April 27, 1999 in Kyoto Prefecture)[1] is a Japanese musician, actress, and presenter. She is a member of the girl group Hinatazaka46.
Early life and education
editMatsuda trained in classical ballet from the age of three until she joined Hiragana Keyakizaka46. She was also a member of her school's taiko club, and started playing the guitar in a band in high school.[2]
Career
edit2017–2018: Early career, Rainbow Parakeet
editMatsuda was a fan of Nogizaka46 and Keyakizaka46 and attended their handshake events. On August 15, 2017, she was introduced as one of the group's nine second generation members.[3] Her catchphrases include "I love natto! I'm Konoka Matsuda"[4] and later "Yahhossu!"[5]
Within the group's television shows, Matsuda is noted for her big reactions and "delicate" balance between aggressiveness and restraint, in contrast to the other members' more forceful approach.[6] In Hiragana Oshi, a music/sports festival segment she proposed was developed into a two-part episode, and her remarkable performance in the episode about the shōnen manga Kinnikuman earned her the moniker "the idol who knows too much about Kinnikuman" from Weekly Playboy.[7] Her routine of ballet dancing combined with impressions of former child actress Mana Ashida was praised by the show's co-host, Masayasu Wakabayashi.[2]
On October 4, 2018, Matsuda appeared as female lead Mariko Senri in an all-female stage production of Rainbow Parakeet. It was the first stage appearance by a Hiragana Keyakizaka46 member outside their own events, and also the first stage collaboration between the group and Nogizaka46, since Junna Ito of that group played the titular role.[8][9] The play was released on Hulu Japan on June 24, 2021.[10]
2019–2020: Hana-chans debut, television dramas
editMatsuda belongs to the Hinatazaka46 guitar duo subgroup Hana-chans with Suzuka Tomita, which released their first song as part of Hinatazaka46's third single in 2019.[11] In 2021, both of them also appeared as the duo Maririn & Rubie in the television drama Koeharu![12]
Matsuda is also a member of the subgroup Factory with Mei Higashimura and Hina Kawata, originally formed for the 2020 television drama Dasada.[13]
Matsuda and fellow Hinatazaka46 member Miho Watanabe are known as Wakuwaku Peanuts (わくわくピーナッツ, lit. 'Excited Peanuts'),[14] and they and Tomita are known as the Gorigori Donuts (ごりごりドーナッツ, lit. 'Pushy Donuts'), who often appear in interviews and television shows together.[15][16][17][18]
On September 21, 2020, it was announced that Matsuda would be taking a health leave to treat an eye disorder.[19] She was discharged from the hospital on October 2.[20] While recuperating, she obtained the Level 2 certification of the Kanji Kentei.[21] On December 24, she resumed her activities with a surprise appearance at the Hina Christmas (Hinakuri) 2020 concert.[22]
2021–present: Hana-chans first solo concert, television and radio personality
editOn June 27, 2021, Hana-chans held their first solo performance aired on MTV Japan, titled MTV ACOUSTIC FLOWERS -Until Full Bloom "Bell & Like" -. The performance was originally planned as a concert scheduled for March 3, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; "Until Full Bloom" was a reference to the postponed event.[23]
From August 2021 to March 2022, Matsuda and fellow Hinatazaka46 members Mei Higashimura and Yūka Kageyama were appointed support ambassadors for the DAZN streaming service's AFC Asian Cup Qualifications "Road to Qatar" campaign. As a football expert, Kageyama would produce an introductory video series to the sport, in which Matsuda and Higashimura would represent the football novices.[24]
From August to September 2021, Matsuda was a regular Monday co-host for the TBS morning show Love It! , joining the "Love It! Family" of entertainers appointed in similar roles.[25][26] This was her first regular television appearance outside Hinatazaka46's shows. One of several incidences of her bursting into tears in the middle of the live broadcast was voted as a "Most Unforgettable Love It!" moment by the viewers in March 2022, and she received a trophy as reward.[27]
Matsuda enjoys listening to radio programs and is able to evaluate them from a scriptwriter's perspective.[6] She is a fan of comedy duo Audrey, the hosts for Hinatazaka de Aimashō, and a regular listener of their radio program, Audrey's All Night Nippon. Nobuyuki Sakuma , the producer of television show Achi Kochi Audrey, described Matsuda as "an unbelievable Audrey fangirl".[28] She considers comedian, scriptwriter, and frequent Audrey collaborator Mitsuharu Sato as her mentor.[29]
On October 2, 2021, Matsuda started hosting her first radio program, Hinakoi presents Hinatazaka46 Konoka Matsuda's Hinatazaka High School Broadcasting Club on Nippon Broadcasting System. The title refers to the mobile game Hinakoi , in which Matsuda's character is a high school radio broadcaster.[30]
Personal life
editMatsuda has an older sister.[2] She grows a Monstera she named "Yahhostera"[31] and a Sansevieria patens named "Sanpahitode" ("San-pa-starfish").[32] She enjoys hot yoga.[33]
