Firstly copy and paste this paragraph which will act as your 'lead paragraph' for your Wikipedia article. You can delete this when you have crafted the lead paragraph for the topic you have chosen but for now you can use this paragraph to get started with editing. Also pay attention to what this paragraph is telling you. You may be working in pairs or a group of 3 for this Wikipedia project so you need to make decisions together about how to manage your workflow for it. We will ask you to submit a PDF version of your sandbox entry when it comes to submission time. Choose one person in your pair/group to upload all submissions. Do not have one person submit the partial draft while another submits the final draft as this will result in plagiarism on Turnitin. An important thing to note about the sandbox is that you can all access each others' sandboxes. However, 2/3 people cannot work on a sandbox at the same time. Only the user logged into it can. So it may be a good idea to draft your paragraphs together in a cloud doc first where you can work on it at the same time together. Then you can copy and paste your work into your sandbox.
Let's now try some Wikipedia features in the sandbox. After each feature you try or change you make, click 'publish changes' and practise adding your concise, explainer sentence. Once your Wikipedia account is atleast 4 days old and you have made 10 edits in your account, you then become an 'autoconfirmed' user. Let's add a Section Heading below this sentence.
Section Heading
editWhen you create a section heading, this will automatically generate a table of contents in your article. Ensure that the title you create reflects the central idea of the section. Within a section you can add sub-sections and visuals all related to the central theme of the section. To title your first sub-section, you will choose 'sub-heading'.[1]
Sub-heading 1
editI will now add another sub-heading below so that again you can see how things end up in the final product.
Sub-heading 2
editI am now going to create a new section so I will need to write my next title below this
what if I add the same sub-header?
Sub-heading 1 again
editAdding a Visual
editIn this section I am going to add an image of a beautiful ocean because quite frankly this is where I would rather be right now. Wouldn't you? Anyway, you can see how the image ends up looking. I placed it to the right of my text here. If you look at other Wikipedia articles, most images are placed to the right of the text.
It would be a good idea to fill this space with text and not have huge blank spaces near your images as visually it just doesn't look great. Make sure then that your text aligns nicely with any images you insert.
Table With Nothing Below
editTitle 1 | Title 2 | Title 3 | Title 4 |
---|---|---|---|
blah | blah | blah | blah |
The size will change according to what you place in the table. Play around with the features so you become familiarized with what you can achieve in a table
