The Philonomosian Society is a student debating society at Georgetown University founded in 1839 by Father John A. McGuigan, S.J.. The Philonomisan Society is one of the oldest collegiate debate and literary societies in the United States. The society’s motto is “Lex, Libertas, Salusque Gentis” which translates to Law, Liberty and the People’s Wellbeing. The original society went dormant following the 1931-1932 academic year. The society was revived in 2023 due to student demands for more free speech on campus and general discontent with Georgetown’s other debate society, Philodemic.
Debates are held weekly on Wednesdays at 8pm. in Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. Debates are usually centered around policy, economic, cultural topics. In the style of great collegiate political unions, the Philonomosian divides its membership along ideological lines between five Cohorts: Progressive, Liberal, Independent, Federalist, and Tory. Members align their arguments with the tenets and values of their Cohort but may speak on either side of the resolution.
