A devotee of Japanese Haiku poetry, Katsusaburo Yamagiwa thus expressed his profound satisfaction after experi mentally inducing squamous cell carci noma, for the first time, in 1915. After 250 days of painstakingly painting crude coal tar on the inner surface of rabbits' ears, Yamagiwa and his assistant, Koi chi Ichikawa, demonstrated that chronic irritation could cause cancer.
