LGBT in Media From Around the World
editGreat Britain
editOne British comedy that features LGBT people is Boy Meets Girl, a love story about a young man and an older trans woman. Something to applaud about the show is that the trans woman is actually played by a trans woman. Even though it seems standard to cast a trans person in a trans role, this is not always the case. Another comedy about a transwoman is Transparent. Transparent is the story about a transgender parent, hence the title, and her grown-up children as they succeed or fail in life. Written by Queer As Folk and Doctor Who writer, Cucumber and Banana are two British television shows that intersect with their scenes. Cucumber is a dramatic comedy about middle-aged gay men which Banana focuses more on the teen years, and has a similar feel to Queer as Folk. Last Tango in Halifax is the story of two childhood sweethearts, Celia and Alan, that reunite after their spouses have passed away. Celia's daughter adds to the already confusing atmosphere by falling in love with a woman who works at the school where she is headmistress. One of the more popular British sci-fi dramas, Orphan Black, tells the tale of many clones, one of which is gay and falls in love with a colleague at her school.
Europe
editDon't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves is a Swedish three-part drama about a group of gay men during the AIDS epidemic in 1982. In Italy, G&T is a dramatic webseries about two college buddies that reunite after five years. The last time Julius and Thomas met was graduation, when they were drunk and a little frisky, which makes it difficult to decipher why they were apart for so long.
Other Parts of the World
editThe Pearl of Africa is a documentary webseries from Canada about the true story of Cleopatra Kambugu, a transgender woman from Uganda. Uganda passed a bill in 2014 that allowed lifetime imprisonment to anyone in a same-sex relationship. As many people know, Orange is the New Black is a very popular Netflix original about life in a women's prison, and Wentworth is an Australian drama that was created to match the success of Orange. Unite 9 is a similar television series from Canada, except it is in French and has more sexual tension. Another French-Canadian drama is Féminin/Féminine, which is about the various ways women can love each other, whether it's platonic or otherwise.
