Franky (フランキー, Furankī) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series One Piece by Eichiro Oda. He is the seventh member to join and the Shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates.

The son of pirate parents who abandon him at age nine, Cutty Flam (カティ・フラム, Kati Furamu), nicknamed Franky, is taken in as an apprentice by shipwright Tom, who built Pirate King Gol D Roger's ship Oro Jackson and also secretly holds the plans for a devastating ancient weapon.[ch. 344, 354, 427] Franky's recklessness eventually provides an opportunity for World Government agents seeking these plans.[ch. 356] Attempting to rescue his master, Franky suffers severe injuries and only survives by rebuilding parts of his body using pieces of scrap metal, turning himself into a cola-powered cyborg with strength.[ch. 336, 339, 352, 357f.] After gaining notoriety as "Cyborg" Franky (サイボーグ フランキー, Saibōgu Furankī), and to fulfill his dream of sailing a ship he built around the world, he constructs the Thousand Sunny, a brigantine-rigged sloop-of-war, for the Straw Hat Pirates and joins the crew.[ch. 435437]

edit

In the anime television series, his voice actor is Kazuki Yao.[4] Patrick Seitz provides his voice in the Funimation English adaptation.[5]

Abilities

edit

Franky is a very talented carpenter and shipwright. But apparently not limited to those fields, as he was able to turn the front of his own body into that of a cyborg.

As such, Franky's artificial parts grant him incredible strength, as well as making him practically invulnerable to most frontal attacks, leaving his back his only weak point, as he couldn't reach it during construction. His fighting style focuses on projectile attacks, including an extendable right bionic arm "strong right" and cannons in his left arm, "weapons left". He also can use his Cola Engine to fire bursts of wind, "Coup de Vent". Other attacks include "Master Nail" where he spits out numerous nails from his mouth, "Fresh Fire" where Franky shoots fire from his mouth and "Franky Centaur" where he splits his legs to make himself into a backwards centaur of sorts. This technique is usually used to pin down the arms and legs of the opponent with his four legs leaving his arms for an attack.

Franky's hair style and attitude are affected by the type of drink he uses for fuel, seen when Chopper accidentally hands him vegetable juice and tea.[6] Franky's strength and weapons are much more powerful when he is fueled by cola, and some of his attacks can not be used without it. His hair acts as a kind of meter to the amount of cola in his stomach, being tall if he is full and sagging if empty. Franky's stomach compartment can hold up to three bottles of cola.

One Piece manga

edit

Franky (known originally as Cutty Flam) was born the son of a pirate in South Blue and crossed into the Grand Line when he was four years old.[7] After being abandoned when he was nine old, he became the second apprentice of the master shipwright Tom, who built Gold Roger's ship, the Oro Jackson. He and Iceburg helped Tom construct the sea train after Spandam, leader of CP5 at that time, brought charges against Tom in order to pressure him into surrendering the blueprints to the superweapon, Pluton. After completing the sea train, Tom refused to give up the blueprints of the ancient warship Pluton, resulting in Spandam using Cutty Flam's fleet of warships to attack Water 7. In order to protect Cutty, Tom takes the blame for the attack and is sentenced to the Marine prison Impel Down. Cutty Flam tries to stop the sea train as it is taking Tom away, but is run over by the charging engine. Nearly dead, he awakens on a scrapped vessel and uses the nearby parts to create his cyborg body. Cutty Flam later returns to Water 7 under the name Franky, where he rounds up the lowlifes of the city to form the Franky Family.

Franky makes his first appearance in the city of Water 7 as the founder and leader of the Franky Family, a group of ship dismantlers and delinquents. Even though he is not technically part of the crew during the Water 7 Arc he joins with the Straw Hat crew to fight the World Government and CP9. With Nico Robin they are both held by CP9 who holds him for Tom's work on the Gold Roger's ship. With the help of the Straw Hat pirates, Franky defeats Spandam and helps the pirates escape from the marines. With their escape he is reluctant to join the crew because he doesn't want to leave his friends and home behind.

Franky appears in numerous One Piece video games. He also appeared in the video games Jump Ultimate Stars and One Piece: Gear Spirit for the Nintendo DS and One Piece: Unlimited Adventure for the Wii.
