Cyriac Auriol, born in 1966, is a French film producer.
Biography
editA graduate of the [[Institut d'études politiques de Paris]], he started out in the film industry as an intern with [[Daniel Toscan du Plantier. In 1992, he founded Les Films du Requin, and during the first three years, he produced some thirty short films, before his first feature film in 1995, [[Arnaud des Pallières]]' [[Drancy Avenir], a historical, poetic and philosophical investigation into the traces of the extermination of Jews in Paris and its suburbs today.
In 1997, he initiated a project to renovate [[Le Louxor cinema]], the failure of which led a few years later to the creation of the [[Cinémathèque de Tanger]].
His major films include :
- The New-Yorker, by Benoît Graffin (1996), first feature film shot on DV
- [[Jeanne et le Garçon formidable]], by [[Olivier Ducastel]] and [[Jacques Martineau]] (1998), a musical comedy in competition at the [[Berlinale]].
- Le Café de la plage, by Benoît Graffin (2000), shot in Tangiers, based on the short story by [[Mohammed Mrabet]] and
[[Paul Bowles]]. - [[Royal Bonbon]], by [[Charles Najman]] (2001), won the 2002 [[Prix Jean-Vigo]].
- [[Héros]], by Bruno Merle (2007), opened the Semaine Internationale de la Critique at the [[Cannes Film Festival]] in 2007.
- Las Marimbas del Infierno, by [[Julio Hernandez Cordon]] (2010), a docu-drama about the creation of a musical group that fuses heavy metal and marimbas, which has won 15 awards at international festivals.
He has also produced or co-produced numerous films by foreign directors, including Cuban writer Joel Cano's 7 dias 7 noches, Grand Prix at the Festival des trois continents 2003, and the film by Tunisian director Nacer Khémir, ''Bab'Aziz'', le prince qui contemplait son âme (Bab'Aziz), presented at Locarno in 2005, Ilusionnes Opticas by Chilean director Cristian Jimenez, or Agua Fria de Mar by Costa Rican director Paz Fabregua, which won the Grand Prize at the Rotterdam Festival in 2010. In 2016, he produced Zin n'aariyâ! / The wedding ring, the first feature film by Nigerian director Rahmatou Keïta.
At the same time, Cyriac Auriol has developed a documentary business, notably with films by Iranian filmmaker [[Mitra Farahani]], [[Juste une femme]], which won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the [[Berlinale]] in 2002, and Tabous (Zohreh & Manouchehr), a documentary on love and sexuality in Iran presented at the Berlinale in 2004. Two clandestinely shot films that illustrate the dualities of Iranian society when it comes to sexuality.
In 2015 he initiated a collaboration with artist [[Pierrick Sorin]], whose optical theaters he now edits.
Together with photographer Yto Barrada, Cyriac Auriol was behind the creation of the [[Cinémathèque de Tanger]] in Morocco, which opened in 2007.
Cyriac Auriol is a member of the ACE European Producers' Network and of the [[European Film Academy]].
