Peter Penzes

Peter Penzes (born May 11, 1968) is an American neuroscientist of Romanian and Hungarian origin. Penzes is a Ruth and Evelyn Dunbar Professor[1] in the Departments of Physiology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Pharmacology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine[2], and director of the Northwestern University Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment[3].

Biography

Penzes was born in Sighet, Romania. In his youth, Penzes studied art under Dudas Gyula and Iuliu Dragos at the Colegiul de Arte in Baia Mare, and later with Csaba Andras and Uto Erzsebet. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Bucharest and received his Ph.D. in biochemistry form the State University of New York at Buffalo[4] under the guidance of Joseph L. Napoli. He conducted postdoctoral studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Neuroscience under Betty Eipper, Richard Mains, and then Richard Huganir [5].

In 2003, Penzes joined the faculty at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he is currently a professor. He is the founding director of the Northwestern Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment

Research

Penzes’ research has focused on the biology and pathology of synapses, the connections between brain cells. He has made seminal contributions to several research areas in neuroscience. He discovered several molecules that govern synaptic structural plasticity and the remodeling of dendritic spines, which are important in brain development and for learning and memory. Penzes’ laboratory has also shown that many genetic risk factors for psychiatric disorders and neurological disorders control the structure and function of synapses, and their malfunction underlies such diseases[6][7][8]. Such disease risk molecules studied in Penzes’ laboratory include: kalirin (KALRN)[9][10], CNTNAP2[11][12], SHANK3, ankyrin-G (ANK3)[13][14], USP9X[15], AMPA and NMDA receptors[16], BIN1[17], ephrins and Eph receptors, and synaptic adhesion molecules. Penzes has made important contributions to the understanding of the biological bases of autism[18][19][20][21], intellectual disability, epilepsy, schizophrenia[22], bipolar disorder[23][24], and Alzheimer’s disease[25][26][27][28].
