Introduction

edit

I started reading Spirit animals, a book series started by Brandon Mull, about 4 years ago and have read each new book as they came out. I have respected him as an author and his way of creating vast and creative worlds, inspired by authors J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and J. K. Rowling. I had never researched him, although I have enjoyed his books, considering them to be as enjoyable as some written by authors like J. K. Rowling. I visited the Brandon Mull page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: Mull's page contains many red links, there are some integral pieces of information left out of the article that should be there, and the page's lack of citations and a general references section

edit

As I was looking for errors or left out info in Brandon Mull's Wikipedia page, I realized that it had 2 red links, which are links that lead to an empty Wikipedia page. In the sentence, "Fablehaven is currently optioned by Schaffer Studios", Schaffer Studios is a red link that leads to an empty Wikipedia article. Another instance where there is a red link is in the list of books in the series Fablehaven. The last book called "The Caretaker's Guide to Fablehaven" is a red link that also leads to a blank Wikipedia page. These red links could be fixed by adding a simple sentence, or more, to both of the empty Wikipedia pages so that there would be a small page but a existing page nonetheless.

Important info left out

edit

I've noticed that Mull's page has left out information that should be there. First off, the beginning sentence has missing books, even though they are mentioned below. Secondly, in the notable works section, his books in the series Spirit Animals are left out, even though Spirit Animals is one of his most well-known series. Finally, both the Spirit Animals series and The Five Kingdoms series were missing links to their Wikipedia pages. These important pieces of information that were left out are not too large and are easy fixes.

Citations

edit

There are 13 citations in this page, which is not a large amount. These links mainly refer to information about Brandon Mull's life and some quotes but only a few are about his actual books. There is actually a part where, after the Spirit Animal's book, Wild Born, is summarized, there is a citation that says that there is a citation needed inside its brackets. More citations would really help the authenticity of the claims made and add additional info to his page. Also in addition to the references and external links fields, a general references field could be added to create a more balanced and accurate Wikipedia page.

Summary

edit

As I look back on Brandon Mull's page, I'd give it a 6 out of 10. There are only two sections (Education/Early Work, and Writer) that cover the author's background that led him to become an author. They are both well cited so the information is reliable. Although further down, the books themselves are very poorly cited (with only 2 citations) but have many links leading to other Wikipedia pages that have some additional citations. Finally, adding important information to the page's intro and notable works section, as well as creating links for books that currently do not have any would greatly improve the completeness of the information.

(sidenote: As part of this assignment, I also posted 2 messages on the talk page of the Brandon Mull page here.)
