Content
Teeth are hard bone-like structures that are located in the upper and lower jaw of humans and animals. There are two sets of teeth:
(a) temporary/milk teeth – 20, last for a short time.
(b) permanent - 32, adult, last for a long time.
There are different types of teeth. Different teeth have different shapes because they do
different jobs (functions) and they have different names, sizes, shapes and surfaces.

Enamel - white covering, hard, protect teeth
from damage.
Dentine - yellow hard bone-like substance, protects the pulp cavity. Pulp cavity - centre of tooth, soft tissue containing nerve vessels and blood. Crown - the part you see when you smile. Root - below the gum. Gum - holds the tooth in place. The tooth is made up of two main parts: crown, root and four tissues.
Importance of the Teeth 1. helps us to chew, speak, smile, make sounds. 2. gives us a beautiful smile 3. make us look good
Day One
Topic: The Teeth
Duration: 2 hours
Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. Sing song about the teeth. 2. Make observations about teeth. 3. Demonstrate willingness to share ideas by participating in class discussions about teeth. 4. Define and use the following concepts correctly: teeth, permanent, temporary, jaw and gum. 5. Make the ‘th’ sound. 6. Read words with ‘th’ in them correctly. 7. Make sentences with words containing the unvoiced ‘th’.
Skills: singing song, making observations, sharing ideas, defining and using terms, making ‘th’ sound, calling ‘th’ words, writing sentences
Procedures/Activities:
Engage: 1. Students will have fun watching a video: How Teeth Grow. They all have different shape/size/surface. 2. Students will tell what the video is about (teeth) and what they know about teeth.
Explore: 1. Students will use a mirror to make observations of their teeth. Rub clean fingers over the teeth. Talk about the shape, texture, size, number and position or location of the different types of teeth in the gum.
Explain: 1. Students will explain if all the teeth have the same shape, size and surfaces. Students will also explain if children and adults have the same amount of teeth. 2. Teacher will count her teeth and share information with students. Students will compare the number of teeth. 3. Teacher will explain to students that they will get two complete sets of teeth over their life time: a set of 20 temporary (milk, baby, primary) teeth which they have now and a set of 32 adult teeth (permanent teeth) as they grow bigger. Continue to explain more about temporary and permanent teeth, the age at which each will appear and so on.
Extend: 1. Students will put the tip of their tongue between their upper and lower front teeth. Let the upper and lower teeth touch their tongue. Gently blow out air and listen to the sound ‘th’. 2. Students will read aloud words with the soft ‘th’ sound (teeth, mouth, bath). Say where they heard the ‘th’ sound in each word (at the end). Call this word “thumb” and say where they hear the soft ‘th’ sound (at the beginning). 3. In groups, students will: (a) Supply other words with the ‘th’ sound at the beginning. (b) Supply other words with the ‘th’ sound at the end. 4. Students will share words with the rest of the class. Practice to call and spell the words.
Evaluate: 1. Students will use a mirror to look into their mouth and count the number of teeth which appears in the top and bottom of their mouth and complete each sentence.
