Stockholm International Peace Research Institute North America (SIPRI North America)
editSIPRI North America is the new Washington D.C. based research center for the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) - an independent, non-profit, international institute dedicated to research into conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament. All of SIPRI's research is based on open sources and is made available to policymakers, researchers, media and other interested parties. SIPRI North America's aim is to increase different global perspectives to security and foreign policy debates across North America and strengthen cooperation between SIPRI and its transatlantic partners. The center was officially launched at the House of Sweden in Washington D.C. on February 6th, 2012 [1]. The first Executive Director of SIPRI North America is Dr. Chantal de Jonge Oudraat.
In the 2011 "Global Go To Think Tanks" ranking results for non-U.S. think tanks, SIPRI was ranked #2 ,and #18 worldwide [2].
SIPRI North America's Mission
edit- strengthen SIPRI's research on conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament;
- enhance connections between North American, European and international researchers and policymakers;
- bring independent, innovative, and international perspectives to bear on 21st century security and conflict challenges;
- provide a new platform for engaging scholars, analysts, policymakers, practitioners, journalists, and the public around the world on global issues.

SIPRI North America is an active participant in the U.S. Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security. The group was established in July 2010 to create greater awareness of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 [3] [4] (2000) on Women, Peace and Security and to provide guidance to the US Government in the development and implementation of the US National Action Plan [5]. - Dr. Barry M. Blechman - Co-founder and Distinguished Fellow of the Henry L. Stimson Center.
- Professor Sissela Bok - Senior Visiting Fellow, Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies and former Professor of Philosophy at Brandeis University.
- Ms. Susan Eisenhower - Member of the SIPRI Governing Board and President of the Eisenhower Group (ex officio member).
- Dr. Bates Gill - Director of SIPRI.
- Professor Catherine McArdle Kelleher - College Park Professor at the University of Maryland.
- Ambassador Henrik Liljegren - Senior Political and Diplomatic Adviser to the Saab Group and former Swedish Ambassador to the United States (1993-97).
- Dr. Steven E. Miller - Director, International Security Program and Editor-in-Chief, International Security, JFK School of Government, Harvard University.
- Mr. Robert Nurick - Non-resident Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council's International Security Program.
- Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering - Vice-chairman of Hills & Company, former US Ambassador to the United Nations (1989-92), and former US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (1997-2000).
- Ambassador Thomas L. Siebert - Former US Ambassador to Sweden (1994-98).
- Ambassador Kurt Volker - Senior Fellow and Managing Director of the JHU/SAIS Center on Transatlantic Relations [6] and former US Ambassador to NATO (2008-2009).
