The Municipalities of Sweden (kommun) are the local government entities of Sweden. The current 290 municipalities form sub-divisions divided into 21 counties (Län). In 1971 the formal differences between city and rural areas were removed and all municipalities are now a uniform type with no local statutes or privileges of any kind.[1]
The municipalities vary greatly in size and population. Smaller and more densely populated municipalities are located around Stockholm and are part of Metropolitan Stockholm. Municipalities in the north have a few thousand residents, but in an area larger than entire counties in the south of the country.[2]
