Explain why you chose the subject/language

edit

I chose Women's rights because the definition of "rights" can differ in every country, especially in countries that are not as democratic as the USA. Some countries' governments view women as equals while others don't. I wanted to compare women's rights between the English wikipedia and the Chinese wikipedia because of the different view of rights, women's rights, and censorship over the internet.

Compare and contrast the two versions on the subpage you've created

Similarities

edit

They each share the same basic definition of Women's rights and link to a plethora of terms and concepts that are related subject matter to women's rights.

Differences

edit

The Chinese page basically has the definition and tables that link to other pages and terms/concepts/ideas. The page is incredibly brief and lacks lots of material that is provided on the English page, which mentions the history of women's rights broken down by country, later developing into a series of headings involving laws, rights, studies and various other subject matter. The English page mentions religious ideals about women's rights and effects of women's rights. The English page provides a plethora of information involving women's rights (pages and pages) while the Chinese page only offers a simple definition. The English page has more information on women's rights in China than the Chinese women's rights page does! The English page notes over 158 sources while the Chinese page doesn't note any.

Does what you found deviate from what you expected?

edit

It does dramatically. I expected the Chinese page to be brief, but I didn't expect one simple definition! I could not believe that the English women's rights page had more on China in one paragraph than the Chinese women'e rights page had about those rights, or any rights for that matter. The Chinese page was so brief, I was shocked. I was expecting it to be tight-lipped, but not this lacking. It is incredible to me that no one has addressed the issue yet, or added any extended information about it. Cultural differences can be astounding, and especially eye-opening.
