Minecraft@Home (sometimes referred to as MinecraftAtHome due to technical reasons) is a community project that helps to find iconic Minecraft seeds and unique world seeds.[a] They are best known for their involvement in finding the Minecraft title screen world seed[1] and the Herobrine world seed.[2]

Pack.PNG

edit

Pack.PNG is a cropped screenshot PNG image found in the files of Minecraft. The image was first introduced and implemented in Alpha 1.2.2a[3] when texture packs were first introduced and served as the default texture pack icon until Release 1.13.2.[4][5][6] It is currently used as the default Minecraft server icon,[4][7] albeit in a greyscale variant.[5][6] The search started on 14 January 2020, when YouTuber SalC1 uploaded a video named 'The Mystery of the Minecraft pack.png file'.[8][9] After the video was published, SalC1 contacted developers of Mojang Studios on Twitter if they had any information on the image file. Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft responded, being unable to answer the question. On September 5, 2020, the seed was found at around 5am in the morning, revealing it to be 3257840388504953787, ending a 8 month search.[10] Interestingly, the seed was reportedly in the last 5% of seeds searched.[11]

Minecraft Title Screen Seed

edit

From Beta 1.8 to Release 1.13.2, a panorama screen was used in Minecraft's title screen.[12][13][14] The panorama shows terrain of Minecraft filled with trees, a cliff and water. User Tomlacko began this project after being interested from the pack.png project by the community. The world seed was found on July 18, 2020 at approximately 5:45AM UTC,[14] revealed to have two valid seeds: 2151901553968352745 and 8091867987493326313.[12]

Herobrine World Seed

edit

The Herobrine World Seed project was started by andrew_555 (also known as Kminster).[15] andrew_555 reportedly took 50 hours to write the code to find the seed and took months of debugging to fix.[2][15] The seed was found on January 16, 2021, with the seed being revealed as 478868574082066804.[16]

Reverse engineering method

edit

Due to the difference in world generation for each project, a unique method is used for each project to crack the seed. A recreation is normally used to accurately narrow down the shape of the terrain. A program called 'BOINC' is used to let contributors contribute their processing power to narrow down seeds, usually being used in the last stages of a project.[17]

Pack.PNG reversal method

edit

Since the image was so low quality in the game files, AI upscaling by using thousands of Minecraft screenshots was used, resulting in a more crisp 512x512 image. From then, a recreation of the image was beginning construction in order to get the location of where the screenshot was taken. They managed to find the Z coordinate by using the pattern in the clouds.[18][17] Water orientation was used to find the direction of where the image was taken.

'BOINC' was then used to file down the potential seeds to 700,000. The candidate seeds were then filtered through another program to check if they matched the height of the terrain of the recreation, resulting in the seed being found.[19][18][17]

Title Screen reversal method

edit

Tomlacko managed to find the exact coordinates and version by looking at the metadata of the images and the tall grass placement.[14][failed verification][b] The seed was cracked by using the biome bending algorithm in Beta 1.7.3 and using it to narrow down potential world seeds.[20][unreliable source?] The seed was reportedly found in the first third of seeds filtered.[citation needed]

Notes

edit
  1. ^ In Minecraft, players are able to generate a preset world by inputting a 'seed' during world creation.
  2. ^ In Minecraft, tall grass is set to a random offset and is the same in each world.
