Biography


His Lordship Justice George Jafeth Masika is a retired Chief Justice and former Director of Public Prosecutions of Uganda, barrister (Middle Temple, United Kingdom), senior law lecturer (University of Nairobi, Kenya), and constituent assembly delegate of Mbale Muncipality, Uganda.  He was Chief Justice of Uganda from 1980 to 1985.


Background and Education


Masika was born in 1932 to Jovan Wafula and Lakeli Nasambu of Butoto village, Buwagogo in Bubulo County, Mbale district.  


He was educated at Kimilili Friends African Mission Primary School, Lugulu Primary School, Kakamega Government African School, Alliance High School, Makerere University (Bachelors of Arts degree), University of Southampton (LLB), University of Chicago Law School (Masters in Comparative Law).


Career


Masika was enrolled into the Society of the Middle Temple (one of the inns of courts in the United Kingdom) as a barrister at law in xxxx.  After his Masters in Comparative Law from Chicago Law School (xxxx) he returned to Uganda and joined the public service, shortly after Independence.  He worked at the High Court as the deputy registrar in 1963 then was appointed deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Ministry of Justice and later DPP in 1969.  As DPP he lectured at the Faculty of Law, Makerere University and was one of faculty’s pioneers. While in exile in 1973, he was appointed senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Nairobi.  On return to Uganda in 1979 he was reappointed as DPP.  In 1980, Masika was appointed Chief Justice of Uganda, a post he held until 1985.


Family


Justice Masika is married to Ruth Christine Masika (nee Mujunga) with four children Dr Rachel Masika, Selina Masika, Susan Masika and George Masika.
