About Me

edit

I am currently a Running Start student going back and forth from my high school and college. I like hanging out with friends and honestly being social and meeting new people. My favorite thing right now is my love for sushi and my constant need for coffee to keep me awake. If I must, I will take part in drinking some mint tea every once in a while, for a substitute drink besides coffee. I am really into Greek mythology and love reading about the different gods/demigods and their origin stories. I may not know a lot of facts about Greek mythology, but I do know it had a big impact on the arts and literature of Western civilization.[1]  My family and I have always had animals running around in the house, so I naturally am an animal lover. We have two dogs and one cat that I love very much.

My Wikipedia Interest

edit

If I decide to stay active on Wikipedia, I'll probably be interested in editing or reading environmental articles that are based on current events. I will also most likely look into different types of animals and possibly explore some food categories or culinary/cooking articles.

Article Evaluation

edit

The reason I chose the topic of flying squirrels is that my Nana has a pet rabbit, and it got me thinking about different types of small furry animals. I then remembered how the other day my friend and I kept seeing squirrels so to narrow my options down I chose flying squirrels. I visited the flying squirrel article on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: separation on certain topics, some websites are not secure, and could’ve included more on their habitat.

The introduction of the article gives a good base and helpful information about flying squirrels. As you continue to read it transitions to the description, which feels long and overwhelming. The detail is sufficient in the description but could be less confusing if there were different sub-headings, instead of just having one big, scary description. For example, the description, states, “Prior to the 21st century, the evolutionary history of the flying squirrel was frequently debated” (paragraph 4). Instead of having this in the overall description, another sub-heading could have been created that talks about history. This just makes it more organized and leads the reader to a new topic.

At the end of the introduction, it states: “Some captive-bred southern flying squirrels have become domesticated as small household pets, a type of "pocket pet".”. When you press on the citation (#2) you think it will take you to a helpful website you can trust. However, what you find is a website/article that is not secure. This causes mistrust in the information provided. If they keep up with their evidence and citations in the future, it could be a lot more trustworthy.

When I finished reading the article it said little to nothing about the habitat of flying squirrels. I do not know if the author assumes we will know these facts or if there was not enough information to describe their habitat. Looking through the article it’s obvious that trees are involved but what type? Where are the flying squirrels most seen? What’s their natural habitat? These are questions left unanswered.

Overall, I enjoyed this article and did learn a bit about flying squirrels. If the changes above were made like organizing/better separating each topic, having secure citations, and missing information added it could be an even better article.
