wrong LANE (film) ...
wrong LANE is a 2012 Swahili drama from new filmmakers, Rama Mwiru and Omar Abu; a story of extraordinary love and fierce loyalty on one hand, and infidelity and despair on another. The drama is centered on a married man, STEVE, whose life has seemingly been perfect; a successful economist owning a 1-billion private company with a loving wife and a beautiful daughter. STEVE has a onetime affair with a 18-year old secondary school girl ADIA which turns poisonous.
PLOT SUMMARY At the Mwalimu Nyerere International airport, STEVE (Gilbert V. Sindani) who returns home from a trip in the United States, is met by his wife, HOPE (Miriam Jolwa 'jini kabula'), and daughter ANGEL (Salma Tuesday). A ride on a beautiful mercedes benz to Masaki neighborhood of Dar es Salaam where the happy family of the successful economist lives is uneventful. The next day, about to leave his office for the day, STEVE receives a phone call from MARK (Johnson G. Mseti 'john cena'), an old friend who has been out of the city for some time that they need to catch-up. STEVE and MARK meet at Beijing restaurant where MARK invites his newest girlfriend, QUEEN (Alice bagenzi 'rayuu'). QUEEN arrives at the hotel accompanied by an irresistibly attractive girl, ADIA (Rose Michael 'zambarau') who looks older than her real teenage. STEVE and ADIA become attracted to each other and at the end of the meeting they had exchanged contacts – phones, emails, facebook and even Skype names. The next day at the office, STEVE receives a Skype call from ADIA who strips on webcam after some conversation. MUDI (Mohamedy Ally), STEVE’s assistant interrupts and STEVE disconnects the call promising to call her later. Over the weekend, when his wife and daughter are out of town, STEVE invites ADIA to a luxury hotel in Bagamoyo town where they have a passionate affair. Though he planned to be extra careful in every aspect, a condom bursts during the course of love making. Two weeks later, while at his office, STEVE receives a phone call from ADIA informing him that she is pregnant. STEVE panics and orders ADIA to meet him after school. After a confrontation in STEVE’s car, ADIA confesses that the pregnancy is in fact not STEVE’s. STEVE finds out that NADIA has a boyfriend by the name DULLA (Dhahabu Francis) with whom they attend school together. NADIA had confronted DULLA earlier but he denied the responsibility and doesn’t want to see or hear from her. ADIA tells STEVE that she needs help so that she can have an abortion. With mixed feelings, STEVE tries to convince ADIA to keep the pregnancy but she is determined to have the abortion out of fear of losing school and being disowned by her strict parents. STEVE calls his old friend, Dr. GEORGE (Kulwa Kikumba 'dude') for assistance with the abortion. STEVE gives ADIA Dr. GEORGE’s contacts and 100 thousand Tanzanian shillings for the procedure. The next day ADIA is at QUEEN’s apartment complaining of severe abdominal pain and is bleeding profusely. QUEEN takes ADIA to a hospital where her condition deteriorates quickly and she dies. At his home, STEVE hears the news of ADIA’s death and later is arrested by the police. STEVE manages to confess to his wife about the affair before being taken to the police station. At the police station, STEVE visibly upset is bailed out by his friend, MARK. While his wife is asleep at night, STEVE opens a drawer and takes out his handgun. STEVE then goes out of the bedroom into sitting room where he aims the gun on his head. Fortunately, HOPE was awake when STEVE woke up and she followed him to the room where she convinces him not to harm himself because ANGEL and HOPE, herself need him so much in their lives. Three months later, STEVE, Dr. GEORGE and DULLA are indicted on different charges each and are sent to jail. The film ends with QUEEN placing flowers on ADIA’s grave and saying some prayers.
