Personal thoughts and biases:
editReligion, science, and mathematics are built off of the same philosophical foundations. These disciplines all use the same logical structure and rules, and sometimes even the same language, to make their arguments. The difference is in the status of postulates. In religion, one must believe the postulates as absolute truth. In science, one must always be willing to disbelieve the postulates in the face of new evidence. And in mathematics, belief or disbelief of the postulates is irrelevant.
In science, math is an invaluable tool for modeling and describing systems, and even for making predictions. Math for math's sake, making no falsifiable predictions or descriptions, while certainly a worthwhile endeavor in itself, should not be confused for science.
Good science writing must consist of more than just equations, derivations, and proofs. For that matter, good math writing probably should, too, although it may not be my place to comment.
Wikipedia is one of my favorite things on the internet.
