Introduction

Although a user of Wikipedia from its beginning, I am only now, June 2011, beginning to make my own contributions. Let's see how it goes.

I have a PhD in American Studies from Brown University and am mostly interested in the arts and humanities as well as in their intersections with the sciences.

While working at the New York Foundation for the Arts in the 1990s, I became involved in creating ArtsWire, a "CompuServe for the Arts" that was launched in 1992. This led to an interest in digital communication issues and in how the arts and humanities could contribute to the development of the World Wide Web, as well as to how culture would be represented online. I was excited by the big promise of the Internet to be able to make fruitful and heuristic connectons among the arts and among the different kinds of cultural institutions that have been storing, safeguarding, curating and presenting our culture: libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, etc.
