Peach Tree Rascals is an American music collective from San Jose, California. It consists of singer-rappers Isaac Pech, Tarrek Abdel-Khaliq, and Joseph Barros, along with producer Dominic Pizano and creative director Jorge Olazaba.

History

edit

Tarrek Abdel-Khaliq, Joseph Barros, Dominic Pizano, and Jorge Olazaba were part of the same friend group at Silver Creek High School, with Isaac Pech joining them during their sophomore year. Pech, who had already been creating, recording, and distributing CDs at school, inspired the group to explore music further.[1] After graduating from high school in 2015, they began experimenting with music themselves.

About a week before their debut song was released, the members went camping and brainstormed random words to come up with a group name. Olazaba initially suggested "Peach Tree Village," but Pech proposed changing "Village" to "Rascals" as they collectively agreed that "Village" wasn't a good name.[2]

In 2019, the members moved in together

In an interview with The Yorkshire Times, the group mentioned they had anticipated a positive reception of the song but hadn't expected it to gain popularity through TikTok.[3]

On July 30, 2019, they released their eighth single titled "Summa," along with a music video that Barros described as "the most seamless to film because everything was improvised."[4] The single was inspired by a night on one of their first writing trips to Los Angeles.[5]

In March 2020, the group signed a record deal with the label 10K Projects. They debuted their eleventh single, "Things Won’t Go My Way," on March 27, marking their first release under the 10K Projects and Homemade Projects labels.[6] The accompanying music video drew inspiration from the 1998 film The Truman Show.[7]

Artistry

edit

The collective has been characterized as embodying the "innovative, grassroots spirit of Brockhampton", featuring "infectious, bouncing beats, and feather-light, mellifluous vocals", according to Sophie Leigh Walker for The Line of Best Fit.[5] Individually, the group members draw inspiration from diverse sources such as Arabic music, West Coast hip hop, and artists like Rex Orange County and Tyler, The Creator. They also find inspiration from their personal relationships with friends and family.[8]

Tarrek Abdel-Khaliq described their genre as "fluid through all the spectrums of music and genres," adding that they define their sound based on what they like.[3] They were included in Complex's Best New Artists of the Month in March 2020. The article praised them as a "seamless blend of genres," noting their ability to weave "patterns through dreamy pop, jazz, funk, and rap without ever losing cohesiveness or clarity."[6]
