UMPQV is Universal Mistake Prevention and Quality Verification. When Poke-Yoke was originally developed, most manufacturing operations were low mix/high volume type operations. Simple Poke-Yoke devices could be effectively implemented at low cost. These many of the Poke-Yoke ideas have limited effectiveness beyond a few different models of products. Poke-Yoke devices are generally used to prevent a particular type of error such as improper positioning or missing parts. They rarely are implemented in a fashion to assure or verify quality. In the new age of high variety/low volume, short product life cycles, and complex assembly, and advanced control and data systems, a more advance concept is required. UMPQV is broken down into three components. Universal reflects a process orientation, not a product orientation. For example: A Poke-Yoke device might employ a set of limit switches mounted into a press fixture to ensure that the blank is properly located in the press.
