Homework 1 After the first module trainings, I have more trust in Wikipedia. I feel more comfortable editing the pages, as well as trusting them. I enjoyed learning about the process of Wikipedia notability before an article is published for public use. It made me feel more confident about using Wikipedia because with the process of notability, articles are fact-checked and peer reviewed and must have reliant cited sources. I also enjoyed learning about the Categories of the article at the bottom of each wikipedia page. This tool is helpful because it will also lead you to other articles of similar categories or subcategories, similar to a hashtag on social media. The training session was helpful learning about the different tools Wikipedia has such as the Sandbox and Talk feature. These features will help editors and users create strong articles for the public to utilize.
Article Evaluation Homework:
The article I have chosen is an article on Cashiers, North Carolina. This article is a good start (probably a 4/10), but is very underdeveloped. It could use more information about the town and the attractions and mountains in the town. The article is also lacking photographs of the scenery in Cashiers, NC. Cashiers, NC has several events year-round that could be included in the article. There is also a surrounding town, Highlands, North Carolina, with lots of tourist attractions that could be included on this page. The article is well written with no bias content with reliable references. There is no talk page attached to the article, telling me that the page is underdeveloped and under visited.
Information to add: Though Cashiers has a small population of 2,000, they have a large amount of tourists throughout the year. During popular seasons, 25,000+ people come to the city to enjoy the scenery and tourism Cashiers offers. [1]
There are several hiking trails and waterfalls in the Cashiers area. One hike in the Nantahala National Forest ends at Schoolhouse Falls, where visitors can swim and enjoy the waterfall. Other waterfalls are Silver Run Falls, Whitewater Falls, Rainbow Fall and High Falls. [2]
There are three universities in the Cashiers area. Western Carolina University is the largest in the area with approximately 2,640 graduates a year. The other two universities are community colleges- Southwestern Community College and Tri-County Community College. [3]
