Robert Ferguson new article content ... Bobby Ferguson started off his football career at Yoker Athletic before moving to Hearts. Unable to break into the Tynecastle first tem he arrived at St. Mirren without having made any first team appearances.

He made his debut at Love Street against Albion Rovers on the 8th of August 1936, scoring in a 3-0 victory. He quickly established himself in the first team usually playing at outside right, but occasionally in the inside right position. His performances started to earn him some good reviews and he was noted for his skill and commitment on the wing. Never a prolific scorer he managed 11 from 41 matches during that first season, but his great contribution to the team was his crosses and wing play which was to set up many opportunities for the central strikers to score. One goal that gave him much pleasure during that season was in a 2-2 draw against his old team, Hearts, at Love Street. After this game the Hearts chairman approached him to congratulate him on a superb performance and tried to entice him back to Tynecastle. Thankfully for Saints the offer was declined.

His good form continued into the following season and he again provided many telling crosses and chipped in with 8 goals of his own.

While the scoring plaudits went to players such as Jimmy Knox and Bobby Rankin, it was the set up play of Ferguson that gained many headlines over the next two seasons.

At the start on 1939-40 Bobby was in his usual position for the first five matches, however after the declaration of World War two, football went into storage for a couple of months and when it resumed team line ups were very inconsistent due to players being away in the forces.

Bobby Ferguson appeared irregularly over the war years but still produced some good displays in the team.

After the war Saints had acquired the services of many new forward players and Ferguson found it harder to gain a regular first team place, but he continued to play regularly in the reserves.

He left saints in 1948 and joined St Cuthbert Wanderers where he played a part in many successes over the next six seasons. During his time at St Cuthbert he was invited to play some trial matches with Queen of the South, even though he was 35 and nearing the end of his career.

In his time at Love Street he played in 122 first team games and scored 29 goals.
