Woodside Community School is a closed and demolished secondary school formerly located on Woodside Road, Plaistow, London, England in the London Borough of Newham. The present Cumberland Secondary School now stands on the site.

Woodside Community School opened in 1972 and closed in 2000. The school primarily served students from the surrounding areas of Plaistow, Custom House, Beckton and Upton Park.

Student Body

edit

Woodside Community School was a mixed comprehensive school for students aged 11-16 years.[1] The primary qualification studied for by students was the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) but in later years the General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) was also available in certain subjects. In its earlier days the school also served as sixth form college for A-level students, a facility which was withdrawn by the 1990s.

Woodside Hill

edit

One of the school's most notable geographical features was the large hill which backed onto the rear of the school building. It was affectionately known as "Mount Woodside" by students and local residents. Now levelled, this hill was originally formed by the covered refuse left over from the site's previous use as a landfill site.

After Closure

edit

After closure, staff and students at Woodside Community School transferred to The Royal Docks Community School.
