The Ol Chiki (ᱚᱞ ᱪᱤᱠᱤ) script, also known as Ol Chemetʼ (Santali: ol 'writing', chemet' 'learning'), Ol Ciki, Ol, and sometimes as the Santali alphabet invented by Pandit Raghunath Murmu in the year 19**, is the official writing system for Santali, an Austroasiatic language recognized as an official regional language in India. It has 30 letters, the forms of which are intended to evoke natural shapes. The script is written from left to right and has two forms Chapa and Usara of which latter is not Unicoded. Unlike as English Upper/lowercase in Santali they are never mixed while writing.
Ol Chiki forms
editGuru Gomke Pandit Raghunath Murmu in his book Ol Chemed[1] has mentioned two different forms of Ol Chiki script[a], where the two forms are never mixed and are independent of each other unlike lower or uppercase of English language where both are used in the same word, in Ol Chiki they are never used in the same word. One form is called Ol Chiki (Chapa) (Santali: Chapa 'print') which is used for Digital publication of Books, newspaper, typing on mobile or computers and the other form is called Ol Chiki (Usara) (Santali: Usara 'broad') which is only used in hand writing and sometimes also called Ol Chiki handwriting or Cursive form. Usara is not unicoded, but it's still used widely for the ease of writing Ol Chiki by running hand.
Ol Chiki (Chapa)
editWidely used while typing and printing newspaper, books etc.
Ol Chiki (Usara)
editOl Chiki (Usara) or Usara Ol (Usara = Broad, Ol = Writing) or handwriting is the form of Ol Chiki script invented by Pandit Raghunath Murmu. It is one of the primitive way of writing in Santali language. It makes the writing very fast, which by using Ol Chiki (Chapa) would not have been possible. The Usara Ol doesn't find any use online for writing and therefore maybe a reason that it is limited to use by hand. It is still used while teaching students in school.
The hand writing letters consist of all the letters, digits and punctuation as of Ol Chiki (Chapa), except the digits and punctuation the shapes of letters changes in Ol Chiki (Usara) changes.
In Usara Ol
and the letters which are formed in combination of /IH/ and four semi-consonants , /AG/, /AAJ/, /UD/, /OB/ with Ahad. In normal writing, the combination of /IH/ with Ahad is not found, as it is generally written in a shorter form that is /OH/.
Difference and Similarity between both forms
editThese are some differences and similarities between two forms of Ol Chiki script.

2. | Use of ᱦ with ᱽ is not found or is used negligible. The combination of ᱦ with ᱽ is not found, as it is generally written in a shorter form that is ᱷ (ᱦ + ᱽ = ᱷ) | The combination is also not found as well |
3. | Digits are from ᱐ᱼ᱙ | No change in digits |
4. | 6 Diacritics (ᱸ , ᱹ , ᱺ , ~ , ᱼ , ᱽ ) are present | No changes are made |

2. | ᱜ, ᱡ, ᱦ, ᱫ, and ᱵ doesn't form ligatures with ᱽ (ᱦᱽ use is not found, instead ᱷ Is used) | ᱜ, ᱡ, ᱦ, ᱫ, and ᱵ form cursive ligatures with ᱽ (ᱦᱽ use is not found, instead ᱷ Is used) |
3. | Words are written asusual without any cursive form. | Words are written in cursive. |
Mixing letters
editThough the Ol Chiki (Chapa) and Ol Chiki (Usara) is never mixed and the original inventor never mentioned any proof of mixing. But, there have been some works which mix both the forms and make use like english capital and small letters. But, still it is yet to be accepted officially.[2]
Lower Case Invention
editSudip Iglesias Murmu who is a graphic designer and typographer by profession, working on it since 2017. Till now only Ol Chiki (Chapa) are used in writing and publishing, Ol Chiki (Usara) is used in writing quickly but despite its fine ability, its circulation is negligible and it is still yet to get Unicode standardization, this way it is still neglected.
He had applied new principle of a series of lowercase letters, which he has integrated with the already existing font of Ol Chiki. Which according to him increase efficiency to type both Ol Chiki (Chapa) and Ol Chiki (Usara) at the same time as used to type in Santali latin characters where they were case sensitive.
Sudip wants to present the work to Ministry of Culture in Government of India through Ajanta HC[3] which preserve and promotes the indigenous culture of India.
