All statistics correct as of 4 April 2021. |
The 2020–21 Liga II is the 8th season, since its reintroduction in 2013, of the second level women's football league of the Romanian football league system. The number of teams increased from 14 to 17. Therefore, 17 teams divided in 2 series were to play in the competition that consists of a double round-robin lasting 16 or 14 stages, totaling 64 or 56 matches, for a total of 120 matches overall.[1]
CSȘ Târgoviște (7th place in 2019–20 Liga I) and Luceafărul Filiași (10th place in 2019–20 Liga I), despite initially drawn to compete in the current Liga I season, were forced to withdraw and enroll instead in Liga II for being unable to comply with medical protocols.[2]
However, due to the inability or unwillingness of some teams to start play in 2020 thanks to the 2019-20 Coronavirus pandemic, the 17 teams were divided into 3 groups, the first two consisting of 5 teams each, and the last one of 7 teams. The first two groups will start play in November 2020 and will consist of a three-legged round-robin, for a total of 15 rounds (12 games each), or 30 games total. The last group, consisting of teams that did not agree to start playing in November 2020 will start the play in march 2020 and will play a two-legged round robin, for a total of 14 rounds (12 games each), or 42 games total. One team from groups 1 and 2 and two teams from group 3 will advance to a play-off, and the top 2 teams will promote to the 2021–22 Liga I. No teams will relegate this season, except those that withdraw and do not play any matches.[3]
