S. R. Ph.D Ranganathan used to be the University Librarian of the University of Madras Library and an outstanding alumnus of the University of Madras. He joined the University Librarian in 1924.
Since he was appointed as the director of the university library, he has been committed to the systematic work of the library, which paved the way for him to establish the basic theories and principles of scientific libraries and information science, from norms to norms in principle. Therefore, he used this large library as his laboratory, traveled around the UK, and studied at University College London to gain a deep understanding of the field of library and information science.
After returning from the United Kingdom, he ran the University of Madras Library, designed the world-famous Columbus classification and catalog code, and published a book called Prolegomena to the Science of Library Information, which is still called The classification of bibles and cataloging schemes for libraries followed closely behind all libraries.
Professional Dean and Messiah, he meticulously improved the Indian public library system to make it an open access system for ordinary people, and in 1948 promulgated the first public library law in Tamil Nadu. This paved the way for other Indian state governments to follow and enact the "Library Act" in their states.
In recognition of his noble work for industry, he received the Padmashri Award from the Government of India in 1957.
During his tenure at the Madras University Library, he formulated the five laws of library science, which is library science grammar of the industry. They are accepted globally and followed by all kinds of libraries of our Mother Earth.
Since his tenure at the Madras University Library in 1924, he has garnered many achievements and honors for the industry, one of which was the establishment of DRTC in Bangalore in 1962, and was involved until his death in 1972.
