The Australian Government's advice on the Copyright Act 1968 ('Short Guide to Copyright', November 2016) states, on p. 11: "The term of copyright protection for photographs taken before 1955, regardless of whether the author has since died or is still alive, has expired".
Since the Wikimedia Foundation's servers are located in the United States, this notice must be accompanied by a statement of the basis for permitting the image to be published in that country. The statement follows.
