Evangelos Stefanatos - The Most Honest Greek of Modern Times
Evangelos Stefanatos was born on March 25 1926 in the Ionian Island of Kefalonia. His parents were poor farmers and the family went thru very dificult times especially during the Italian and German occupation in WW2. At the age of 20 he joined the Royal Greek Police (Ελληνική Βασιλική Χωροφυλακή) and he reached the retirement rank of colonel. During his entire career he was famous for his honesty and passion for justice. In times where the whole country was and still is accused of corruption in every level of public and private sector, he never accepted even a free glass of water and this is most likely the reason that he died poor on Good Friday, April 18 2014, in contrast to many others in similar positions who are some of the richest people in Greece today.
