He discovers how far he will go and what lines he will cross to keep what is rightfully his.
History
editIn the original telling of Peter Pan, Captain Hook has always represented adulthood, while Peter has been the model of youth. Throughout the years and various remakes, the story as remained relatively the same: Peter is the hero and Hook the villain.
Plot Summary
editThe novel focus on the origins of the infamous Captain Hook. Who was in prior to the encounter with Peter? How did he lose his hand?
The story begins with two elemental beings, air and water, fighting aboard the Black Compass. While the crew watched on, the fight eventually ends with Daria as the victor. The air elemental's body (or "vessel") is destroy, causing his soul to remain forever trapped within the blue orb set in the hilt of the small knife with which he fought. As the crew cheers at the outcome, Daria warns a young Robert Benedict not to touch the sword. She then leaves to discuss with Captain Davis the means to destroy the knife.
After Daria has left and the ship has made its way back to shore, Robert secretly steals the knife. Eventually, he is caught by a gang of young boys led by Pete. Pete demands the knife, believing the blue orb to be a jewel that would fetch the group a substantial reward. When Robert refuses, the boys begin to fight. Eventually, Peter takes hold of the sword, thus releasing the air elemental who possesses his body. Robert, fearful of what he has done and the consequences, runs.
Cut to present time, we find Eileen Davis in a dead end job, who, through a series of encounters, ends up on a unique cruise. On this cruise she meets James, but decides to avoid him in future. She is transported back to the 1600s, where she meets (a now grown up) Captain Robert Benedict. The captain had been told by Daria that a mysterious woman found in the sea would leave him to treasure. Seeing Eileen in the ocean, he immediately rescues her in the hopes of finding said treasure. Eventually, she develops skills as a sailor and pirate. But for what purpose? Using a storm and the sea, Daria pulls Eileen back home. Eileen wakes back on the cruise ship and decides to meet James after all.
Years later, we find James and Eileen are in a relationship together, but Eileen's self-confidence issue that seemed to have been resolved previously has now resurfaced. Daria again manipulate events to bring Eileen and Captain Benedict together again. Benedict's attraction to Eileen develops, directing his actions. James proposes to Eileen. And a mysterious creature makes a brief appearance in the wooded area near their home in Westport. After using him briefly, Daria cruelly pulls Benedict away from Eileen and back home to the 1600s.
Again, years pass and once again James and Eileen are together, except now they have a three year old son, Robert Benedict. A seemingly perfect life with a successful job at J.A.S. shipping company, married to his soul mate, with a son and another child on the way, James is happy. But all of this changes as the evil creature visits Eileen at night while James is away. Patrick, a family friend, packs up the family to take them somewhere safe, only to find the creature has followed them. Once James arrives him, the family is together again and on Patrick's yacht, away from any danger. Little did they realize that the creature pursuing them could fly. When the night ends, James' life is changed forever. Once again, Daria steps in, this time sending James back to the 1600s, specifically to Captain Robert Benedict.
