Saurabh Sharma is the current Joint Secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union.[1] He is also a student leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) , the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).

In September 2015, he won the JNU Student Union's election for the post of Joint Secretary. Registering a historic win over nearest AISA candidate, he became the first ABVP leader in 14 years to mark a victory inside the Left bastion JNU.[2] He rose to popularity for his strong opposition to a students' rally raising anti-national slogans inside JNU campus on 9th February 2016.[3]Under his leadership, ABVP took out a JNUFor Nationalism march strongly condemning the anti-India remarks made by Kanhaiya Kumar and brigade.[4]He also appeared on India Today conclave 2016 as a guest speaker.[5]

A disciplinary committee was constituted by JNU's Vice-Chancellor to investigate the 9th February event. It holded Kanhaiya Kumar,Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid guilty for circumventing the 'permission process' for the event. But in a shocking turn of events, the committee imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on Saurabh Sharma too for 'blocking the procession'.[6] He went on an indefinite hunger strike against the fine imposed. His health worsened and was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi.[7]Vivek Agnihotri, director of the movie Buddha in a Traffic Jam, offered to pay his fine.[8]
