Summary

I am a Senior at Drake University studying Sociology and Law, Politics and Society. After graduation, I would like to work in non-profits helping at-risk youth. I plan to go back to graduate school to get my Master's in Social Work within the next few years.

Proposal

My topic for my Wikipedia page will be Youth in Uganda. For this focus I would like to cover several areas with an intermediate level of depth to give it a wide base. I think this will provide the basic framework for the topic and it will allow others in the Wikipedia community to add their knowledge in the following areas.

On my Wikipedia page, I would like to cover the main demographics of the youth in Uganda. I’m thinking I would put this is a side box that is easy to read and glance over. I would like to have an Introduction section about the overview of Ugandan youth. This would cover some demographic areas as well. Then I would like to go into the areas of family, education, employment, health, and recreation. These areas I think are overarching, broad topics that give the potential for a lot of good information to be placed in it.

I think this page will provide a solid base knowledge for those interested in learning a bit more about what the youth are like in Uganda. I recognize it will not touch everything possible about the lives of the Ugandan youth , but it will be able to provide a better framework for those who have little knowledge in the area.

Rough Draft of Youth in Uganda Page

Here is my rough draft of my Youth in Uganda page. It obviously needs a lot more information and work, but this is just the first of many drafts. I was having trouble finding what the youth recreation life was like in Uganda so I decided to switch that category to Rural vs. Urban life. I chose this subject because through my research, it seems that the rural areas and urban life are vastly different and can affect youth's lives in different ways. I still have a lot to research about these differences though.

Demographics

Uganda has the youngest population in the world, with 77% of its population is under 30 years of age (Population Action). There are 7,310,386 youth from the ages of 15-24 years of age living in Uganda (Urban Ministry). The male to female ratio is 100.2 males per 100 females (Urban Ministries). Life expectancy at birth for males is 42.59 and 44.49 for females (Urban Ministry).

Education

Uganda established Makere University, its first private university in 1988 and a second public university in 1989. In the early 1990s, Uganda introduced private sponsorship into the public universities (Biasaso 2010). By 2005, there were 27 universities in Uganda and of which 80% were private institutions (National Council for Higher Education 2006a). The youth literacy rates between 2005 and 2010 were 90% for males and 85% for females (UNICEF 2010).

Employment

The unemployment rate for young people ages 15-24 is 83% (World Bank 2008). This rate is even higher for those who have formal degrees and live in the urban area (Population Action). This is due to the disconnect between the degree achieved and the vocational skills needed for the jobs that are in demand for workers. Informal sector work accounts for the majority of young workers in Uganda (Garcia 2008). 3.2% of youth work for waged employment, 90.9% work for informal employment, and 5.8% of the Ugandan youth are self-employed (Garcia 2008).

Health

Age at sexual debut within this community in 2000 was reported at 16.7 years for young women and 18.2 years for young men, while the median age at marriage was 19.5 years for young women and 24 years for men (Kamali et al. 2000). Information on sexual and reproductive health for young people comes from a variety of sources including parents, paternal aunts (ssenga), uncles (kojja), older brothers and sisters, peers, radio and newspapers, (Muyinda et al. 2003; Nobelius et al. 2010; Nyanzi, Pool, and Kinsman 2001). When asked if they had knowledge about HIV, 38% of males ages 15-19 said yes and 31% of females in the same age range said yes (UNICEF). When asked at what age people should become sexually active, all participants across all data collection methods stated that the ideal age is between 18 and 20 years. When asked at what age people actually do start to have sex the answers ranged from 4 to 16 years, but all young people believed this was too early. (Nobielius 2010).

Rural vs. Urban life

Ugandan youth experience different lifestyles depending on if they live in a rural or urban area. Many youth decide to migrate from the rural areas to the urban areas based on factors that include kinship ties and friendship ties, rural incomes, role of rural education, and the rural social system (Byerlee 1974).

Content: I think you have a good start but could beef it up with some more sources or use more information from your sources. This may change after you integrate the wiki article into your own information that you found. Maybe you could even use the information from that movie about youth in Africa; you may have to watch it again though to collect more information, but I don't see why you could not use videos as sources :) This may be weird but you could talk about familial structures within Uganda or with the education section you could talk about how education is limited to the rich? In the employment section maybe talk about the job distribution in Uganda. I would say that you also need more information on the rural vs. urban life section.

WP community standards: Looking at this criteria you have not cited and maybe it's considered plagiarism; I am not there yet with all my citations either though. I would say just make sure you get that figured out ASAP. Once you enter in your citations, it will make your part of the article "notable" as it states in the rubric.

Writing style: The information you provided was concise and easy to understand. Good job! Your tone is formal and you use straight up facts for everything which is what Wikipedia people want so good job! I would say that you need more hyperlinks though; I would suggest taking foreign terms/concepts within your Wikipedia page and look them up on Wikipedia and if there is information for those topics, then hyperlink.

Structure of article: Don't forget to have an introduction section; I forgot that too- whoops. Don't forget to merge your information with the Wikipedia article you are adding to. Your information makes sense where you put the it all; and the headings are logical and accurate, great job! Maybe incorporate some images within your Wikipedia article?
