Forum Kritische Archäologie (FKA) is a non-commercial, academic archaeological journal published online in Diamond Open Access format. It was founded in Berlin in 2010 and first appeared in 2012. In order to remain independent both in content and form, the journal is self-published.

Content

edit

The journal engages with political, ethical, and social dimensions of archaeology. Critical reflections on archaeological work itself, on cultural heritage, as well as on archaeological narratives and results play a central role. Forum Kritische Archäologie places no limits on archaeological subdisciplines or time periods. On the contrary, the forum strives to undiscipline archaeology.[1]

Format

edit

Forum Kritische Archäologie publishes research articles, debates, interviews, themed issues, and open formats. In addition, The journal sees itself not only as a scholarly journal, but also as a forum that organises events.[2]

History

edit

Forum Kritische Archäologie was founded on the 30th of March 2010, in the rooms of the Institute for “Near Eastern” Archaeology at the Freie Universität Berlin, by Aydin Abar, Reinhard Bernbeck, Christoph Forster, Johannes Greger, Carolin Jauß, and Susan Pollock. After two years in which an editorial collective (self-designation “Herausgeber_innenkollektiv”) and a scientific advisory board were constituted and editorial preparations were made, the first volume volume – a theme issue on "What is critical archaeology?" – was published in 2012.[3]

Since then, the configuration of the editorial collective has changed several times. As of July 2024, it consists of Reinhard Bernbeck, Stefan Burmeister, Christoph Forster, Johannes Greger, Barbara Hausmair, Susan Pollock, Lea Rees, and Stefan Schreiber. The collective works on a democratic basis; there is no main editor.[4]
