Married David Carl Hein, October 12, 2001 in New York City, NY. Sankoff and Hein met in 1994 at York University. Irene was a member of Winters College until she became a Residence Don for her 4th year in which she had to become a member of Bethune College in order to take the position.
Attended York University for Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, originally started as a Theatre Studies student in 1994. Graduated from york University in 1998. Attended The New School for a Master of Fine Arts which was completed in 2002.
One child, Molly Sankoff-Hein, born 2013 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In 2008 she and her husband decided to write a musical together so that they could spend the summer together in the same city.
