Biography

Dr. Mario Gosálvezwas born in Madrid, Spain on September 11, 1940. He completed his undergraduate (1959-1963) and doctoral studies (1964-1968) in Medicine and Surgery at the Medical School at the Complutense University of Madrid.

During his postgraduate studies, he was Visiting Professor in Anticancer Chemotherapy with George Mathé in Paris France in 1964 and in Cellular Microscopic Spectroscopy with Go Thorel at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm in 1967. Gosalvez then went to the U.S. to work with Britton Chance at the University of Pennsylvania as Postdoctoral and Associate in Mitochondrial Bioenergetics from 1968 to 1969 and S. Weinhouse at Temple University as Research Associate in Enzimology of Glycolysis from 1969 to 1970.

Gosalvez also spent time in Denmark with Jens Christian Skou at the Aarhus Universityas Visiting Professor in Na-KATPase and Ion Transport in 1976.

Clinical Experience

Gosalvez did his Residency and was Assistant Chief at the National Cancer Institute in Spain from 1964 to 1967, working on Anticancer Chemotherapy. He later went on to serve as a consultant in Endocrinology and Nutrition for Sanitas now part of Bupa, from 1970 to 1977.

Research

Gosalvez worked at Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Madrid for 40 years, first as Chief of Laboratory (1970 to 1975) and then as Chief of Service of Experimental Biochemistry (1975 to 2010), where he focused on Experimental and Clinical Research in Biochemical Pharmacology of Cancer and Mitochondria.

Teaching

Gosalvez was Assistant and Associate Professor in Boiochemistry and Physics for Physicians at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1964 to 1968. He served as Professor in Biochemistry (1970 to 1977) in Biochemistry and in Biophysics (1978 to 1992) as well as Doctorate professor in Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology of Cancer (1992 to 1994) at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Distinctions

In 1977 and 1979, Gosalvez recieved a National Prize of Biochemistry awarded by the Spanish Social Security System. Experimental Chemotherapy through Bioenergetics and Ion transport.

He served as Vice President of the Spanish Association and International Congress for Cancer Research in 1982 and was also a Corresponding Member in 1976 and Emeritus Member in 1998 of the American Association for Cancer Research.
