The Bank of Namibia issued the first banknotes on 15 September 1993, and the coins in December 1993.

The Republic of Namibia has its own national currency although the South African Rand is still a legal tender and can be exchange on a one on one basis. Namibia is part of a Common Monetary Area (CMA) [1] www.atsnotes.com/catalog/banknotes/namibia.html

Courtesy Bank of Namibia and Claudio Marance was released 22 March 2012. [2]

Bank notes was launched by President Hifikepunya Pohamba on Independence day 21 March 2012 in Mariental, but only started to circulate in May 2012. The N$10 and N$20 dollar notes has the portrait of the Founding Father Dr Sam Nujoma, while the N$50, N$100 and N$200 dollar will continue to liberation icon Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi. Follow these three simple steps:


Take a careful look at the overall colours, the portraits and the numbers. Lift the banknotes up to light and discover see-through features and watermarks.


Flip the banknotes to check for colour-changing, dynamic features, and for glossy prints. Check the multicoloured security thread on the reverse.


Feel the unique banknote touch and raised prints by running your fingers on both sides of the banknotes.

The dominant colour of the N$10 banknote is blue. Its dimensions are 129 x 70 mm. On the front is the portrait of H. E. Dr Sam Nujoma. On the reverse, the antelope illustrated is the Springbok.
