Andrew Rowland is a paediatrician based in Greater Manchester, UK specialising in paediatric emergency medicine.

Early life

edit

Rowland is originally from County Durham, UK.[1][2] He moved to Nottingham to study medicine at the University of Nottingham in 1995 and, after graduating, moved to Manchester to work as a doctor in the North West of England.[3][4][5]

Professional associations

edit

Rowland holds Fellowships of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is also a member of the Academy of Medical Educators, United Kingdom and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.[6]

Career

edit

In 2014 Rowland was awarded an honorary professorship[7][8] at the University of Salford for his work on child advocacy and safeguarding vulnerable children is held locally, nationally and internationally. Rowland advocates for children and young people, promoting and encouraging their involvement in the co-design of health and social care services.[9]

In 2014 Rowland's Fellowship[10][11] from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust enabled him to investigate the impact of mandatory reporting of child abuse,[12] the work of children's advocacy centres and strategies used to identify children at risk of child sexual exploitation and trafficking. Following the launch of his Fellowship report, Rowland et al. published an academic paper setting out the scientific and legal arguments for equal protection of children and young people; effectively the academic arguments supporting prohibition of physical punishment of children.[13]

From 2016 to 2017 Rowland led a project working with children, young people and professionals to design a new learning and engagement model aimed at giving information to professionals[14] about how to have difficult conversations with children, young people and young adults about relationships, sexuality, home life, domestic abuse, alcohol and drugs and how to spot signs of risk of child sexual exploitation.[15]

In 2017 Rowland was one of the doctors who took part in the emergency medical response to the Manchester Arena Bombing.[16]

In 2017 Rowland was awarded the Association Medal[17] by the British Medical Association (BMA) in recognition of his distinguished service to the association and his contribution to medicine. Rowland's detailed knowledge on the subject of child protection, his active role in the BMA on safeguarding vulnerable children policy and his achievements in medicine were testified to by the conferring upon him of the Association Medal.[18]
