Welcome to Nowa Huta is an international summer football tournament, held since 2010 in the Hutnik Municipality Stadium in Kraków, Poland. The tournament was named after the Nowa Huta district of Kraków, as the district is both the location of the stadium, and the seat of the host team, Hutnik Nowa Huta. Since 2013, the tournament has an official logo, designed by Karol Jurek. Welcome to Nowa Huta is the longest-running recurring summer football event in Poland. Its creator and managing director is the Manager of Hutnik Nowa Huta, Adam Gliksman.

History

edit

In 2009, during the 60th anniversary of the district of Nowa Huta, supporters of Hutnik Nowa Huta, cooperating with the Municipality of Kraków, held a match between Hutnik Nowa Huta and the world's oldest club playing association football, Sheffield F.C. The match was held on 25 July 2009, and concluded with Hutnik's victory and the final score of 3-1. In 2010, the managing duties of Hutnik Nowa Huta were taken over by the newly established association Nowy Hutnik 2010. The first public event organized by the new management was a new edition of "Welcome to Nowa Huta." The concept of the new recurring tournament was to regularly invite foreign football teams with established history and support. The tournament allows Hutnik Nowa Huta to compete against a selection of foreign clubs, while promoting Nowa Huta, Kraków as well as Lesser Poland; as such, apart from the match, the tournament offers additional events, including amateur matches as well as various non-football games and attractions open to the public.

The first edition of the recurring tournament concluded with the victory of Germany's 1. FC Magdeburg, and the final score of 2-0. The second edition saw Hutnik Nowa Huta facing off against Spain's CD Universidad de Navarra, and emerging victorious, with the final score of 3-0. In the third edition, Hutnik Nowa Huta lost agaist one of the oldest football clubs in Slovakia, FC Petržalka 1898, with the final score of 1-2. The fourth edition saw the victory of Hungary's Ferencvárosi TC, and the final score of 1-2. The fifth edition, in which Hutnik played against Ukraine's Dynamo-2 Kyiv, ended with the victory of the visitors' team over the host, and the final score of 6-1.

Rules

edit

There are two participants: the host, Hutnik Nowa Huta, and a single foreign football club, invited by the host. The match lasts 90 minutes. If no clear winner can be determined after that time, the final score is determined based on subsequent penalty shots.

Trophies

edit

Both participating teams receive trophies sponsored by the Mayor of Kraków Jacek Majchrowski (2010-2011), and the Chairperson of Lesser Poland Regional Assembly Kazimierz Barczyk (2012-2014).

Sponsors and partners

edit

Since 2013, the tournament has been sponsored by Nalco An Ecolab Company. In 2011 and 2013, the tournament was officially partnered with the Municipality of Kraków, while in 2012, 2013 and 2014 it was partner with the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
