Fatima College of Camiguin (previously known from 1922 as the Camiguin Institute, then 1948 to 1962 Fatima Jr. College of Camiguin) is a school and college located in Mambajao, Camiguin, the Phillipines. It was one of the center of secondary education in Misamis Oriental for many decades especially before to the eruption of Mt Hibok-hibok in 1952.

History

The Camiguin Institute was founded by the late Don Leon Borromeo in 1922. Government recognition and approval for operation of a complete Elementary and Secondary courses was received in 1927. When World War II broke out in 1941, the school was closed. The old main building was burned by the Japanese forces. Father John Pollock,S.J. re-opened the school after the war through the help of the Jesuit priests. The Sisters of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) took charge in administering Camiguin Institute. Rev. Arthur F. Shea,S.J. changed the name of the school to FATIMA JUNIOR COLLEGE to honor the Blessed Mother. In 1951 the Hibok-Hibok volcano erupted. The campus educational activities of FJC were temporarily transferred to a nearby barrio of Mambajao called Tupsan. Government recognition for a complete elementary course was given by the Department of Education # 390 s. 1956. The General Clerical Course in college got its recognition also in May 26, 1956. The RVM Sisters left Camiguin and entrusted the school to the Columban missionary priests who took over the administration until 1957. In 1958, through the invitation of the Bishop of Cagayan de Oro, through the help of the Irish Columban missionary priests in the island, the Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM) from Ireland responded to the invitation and came to administer the school. They earned for the school the name Fatima of Camiguin, dropping the word Junior and adding of Camiguin for identification with the registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) due to the offering of the 4-year degree courses. The first Directress was Sister M. Emmanuel Browne,RSM . In June 28, 1968 four college courses got its government recognition, i.e. Bachelor of Arts (AB) Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) and Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC). In May 11, 1977 the Junior Secretarial Course got its government recognition, In July 30, 1992 the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) got its government recognition and in September 16, 1994 the Computer Secretarial Course also got its recognition. The school also got recognition from the government’s Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for its vocational courses such as : Two- Year Information Technology Office Management NTR # 031002049 on June 20, 2003 ; Two-Year Computer Technician WTR # 031002048 on June 20, 2003. The latest was the approval by the Commission in Higher Education (CHED) for the offering of the Graduate Studies in 2002. The RSM Sisters administer the school up to the present.
