Birth and Family life:

    Sri Dr. Kovela Sampath Kumara Charya was born on June 26, 1933, to a well-known pandit Sri Kovela Kandada Rangacharyulu and Chudamani at Warangal in Telangana, India[1]. Sri Rangacharyulu had four sons and Dr. Sampath Kumara Charya was the youngest son of Sri Rangacharyulu. Dr. Sampath Kumara Charya married K. Laxminarasamma and they have five children – Bharathi, Sandhya, Sharath, Usha and Aravinda.

Early life and education:

  Dr. Sampath Kumara Charya got his early Vedic education from his father. He joined a Sanskrit school in Warangal where he learnt Sanskrit. He completed Bhasha praveena from a Sanskritic school in Bandar Chittigudu. He received his first M. A. (Master of Arts) degree from Osmania University in 1963. He received his second Master of Arts degree in Hindi by writing the exams privately in 1966. He completed Ph. D. from Kakatiya University in 1978 for his research work on ‘Adhunika Telugu Sahitya Vimarsha’ (Critical work on Modern Telugu literature).[2] He worked as a teacher at Mallikarjuna school in Warangal and then as a teacher at Junior college in Jagityal, Karimnagar Dist. Then he joined as a lecturer at Government Arts college in Warangal before joining as Telugu Professor at Kakatiya University and retired from Kakatiya University in 1993.[3]  He settled at Hyderabad after his retirement.

Death

Dr. Kovela Sampath Kumara Charya took his last breath on August 5, 2010 surrounded by his family and friends.

Published works

Dr. Sampath kumara Charya wrote many books that were well read and popular in Telugu literature world. He was considered a great poet, critic and the pioneer on Telugu Grammar. His book on grammar ‘Chandovikasam’ was also used in many schools as a study book for students. He also wrote many books with his brother’s son, Sri Kovela Suprasanna Charyulu, including the popular Chethanavartam – a collection of poems by four poets.
