Twenty-three years old, Shripavan Radhakrishnan was at the receiving end of judgmental stares, bullying and jeers from college mates, and too many unsolicited advices on weight loss. The swelling paunch of his pear-shaped body was not jaunty anymore but seemed weighted with guilt and regret. Revelling in sugary condiments, pastilles, and frozen desserts was not pleasurable but a remorseful habit of a glutton that made him dread himself. Diarrhoea and nausea were quotidian things in this life. Life dragged on, and all small efforts went up in smoke. It would not be easy to shed off a decade-old habit-that was certain. Like every novice, he did not know where to get started and if it was possible to get rid of the 160 pounds he had put on. But life moved in circles from eating all that he wanted, loathing himself, making plans of how he could change all that was and repeat. That was until April of 2018 when he realized how he had to salvage his health and physique before it debilitated his emotional and social life altogether! He knew little about how any drastic change could come about, and if all people out there touting to help you shed all that extra fat were genuine and delivered results. He did not have had the resources or the knowledge to visualize if he could do anything about his situation or if it was even possible, but he had the will to try and give his best shot. And if when there is a will, there has to be a way. So, the question that piqued us was, what was that way, and did it get him the desired upshot? He doesn't let you off with any simple yes or no, "There is no magic potion that you can down and expect the results to show up," he elaborates, "what is important is consistency, and starting with micro-changes in your lifestyle." He tells us that most people believe that making dietary changes is all you need to get into the perfect posture you always wanted. Eliminating junks, carbonated drinks, and all kinds of extra processed food is the first thing you should do when embarking on the gruesome journey of weight loss, but that is not the only thing that can shed those extra fats. Dietary changes have to be augmented with some sweating and workouts. This need not be as monstrous as it sounds, he giggles. You definitely cannot race marathons or jog miles on the first day itself. If your extra weight is like some giant monster threatening to eat the healthy and happy life you deserved, and you had to kill the monster, then you should not start hitting arrows straight away and feel awful about being thwarted again. You have to be patient, gather all the ammunitions you might need to kill him, and talk to people who have killed a similar monster before and closely watch their strategies. But even when you are all psyched up to take the monster down, you cannot do it in one day. You had to saw and hew one limb at a time, aiming at the part that is mutating him bigger first. It would help if you kept hitting at a part until you are sure it won't grow back, and when you are sure about, hit the next target, until the monster is all gone. If you settle and plod after the monster has gone, the monster could come back, so make sure that you do something to ward it off far away from you. "I started with brisk walking and planks and infused a healthier diet in my lifestyle," he enlightens. He tells us that this would help one's metabolism and get anyone kick-started to burn fat. Once one has imbibed this habit, one can add detox drinks and some rigor to their workout ethics. According to PaceofSpaces CEO, while cardio is good to get one started, it is essential to understand your body type and then define choose a workout regime to achieve the best results. Ectomorphs would need more protein to gain lean muscles, endomorphs, who have excellent strength, need more cardio and low fats while a mesomorph, who has the gifted ability to not being on either of the extremes, should go for both cardio and strength exercises. Lacing your boots and getting started might seem the tough part, but according to him, it is sticking to the routine diligently and hitting the track mill every day that will require an immense will power. “Don't just keep jonesing for a fit body,” he emphasizes, “get your ass in gear and start doing something about it, and once you have to keep doing it every day until it is as much a habit as brushing your teeth twice every day!” Shri also exhorts people to get a tracker like a GOQii band to measure their progress every day. “It can turn out to be more fruitful and rewarding than you realize!” he quips. Knowing where you stand, how much you have covered and keeping an eye on the target is crucial. One needs to connect with likeminded people who are earnest about their weight loss and can keep them motivated. He listened to people who had accomplished weight loss in the past and guzzled every piece of motivation out there. He tells that as long as you keep fretting about your figure and what it has turned into, you cannot get out of that loop. It is vital to have a coach you can sail you through this tough journey, push you to your maximum potential, guide your dietary changes through the process, and tell you when to shift to more rigorous exercises that include crunches, balance training, and the more complex co-ordination exercise.
