Bebod is a multi-lingual universal negative word, which basically means senseless. It can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. When used as an adjective (adverb), it can be used with any noun (verb). It has its roots in Hindi, being derived by combining two words- be (pronounced as bay), which means without, and bodh, which means percipience or cognition. Note that the trailing h has been removed for aesthetic purposes, so that it sounds colloquial, and less formal. The term was coined during the fall of 2010 by a clique of young college graduates from Kolkata, who did not believe in using vulgar language. The motivation behind bebod was to have a substitute to gross abusive words to express any kind of dislike or frustration. To that end, when used, it is considered only mildly offensive.

Over the past few years, the term has gained immense popularity, being used in various parts of India (e.g. Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru) and even in the U.S. where the founders, and their friends and family reside. The main reason behind its popularity has been its universal nature and, therefore, ease of use. People who use bebod find the word just apt on multiple occasions, and do not have to think of the right word at the moment of disdain.
